Title: Chain & Sprocket change, and a cooler new look
Post by: AbooodZ on May 14, 2012, 10:54:11 AM
Hey all!

This question might already be on here somewhere, but given my limited knowledge in mechanics, I wasn't able to find it. My '09 monster 696 is overdue for sprockets and chain change. As far as I know, there are better & cheaper options than the OEM parts. Would you recommend any manufacturers? Also, I'm looking for a cool new color for the chains and sprockets, so if you have suggestions lemme know :) (i have black/red monster).

One last question: what about the numbers? My mechanic suggested i go for a 14/520 instead of 15, and 45/520 on the rer.

Thank you all in advance, y'all rock  [thumbsup]

I suggest you look over the offerings from our sponsors!

09 and the chains done already? Either you ride quite a lot , or you're not taking care of the chain. I replaced a chain not so long ago with around 15K miles on it that probably could have done a bit more but was starting to need frequent adjustment due to stretch.

YOu taking care of that chain?

But, some questions to ask
- Do you want a light rear sprocket or long lasting? Steel will last long, but be heavy. Aluminum will wear faster but is lighter. THough, I was running an AL sprocket above and it probably had a few more Ks left.
- AL will probably have more color ways, steel is usually black or steel.
-

regarding you mechs recommendation - 14 tooth up front is the cheap way one does it when you get a bike and want to change the gearing, but don't want to spend on a new chain. Adding (roughly) 3 teeth in the back is how you do it when you're replacing the whole kit.

Whats the differance between 1 down and three up in the back? Is it easier on the tranny?

Clearance and speculatively easier on the chain. Tighter radius of the 14 may promote wear.

Tighter radius does bring the chain closer to the swing arm and depending on suspension set up can have the chain ride the slider a bit more than is idea
