Title: strange thing while riding...falling parts.
Post by: tristantumble on May 18, 2012, 06:05:07 AM
i was riding along today and from the corner of my eye i see a metal rod fall off my bike. as i pull over and try to shift down trough the gears i realize that something i blocking my ability to shift. i pull over and realise that the metal rod that is under the seat that holds the tank up somehow came loose and fell off. Luckily nothing happend, but had this been on the highway, or the rod would of gotten caught in the wheel this would of been bad. form now on im keeping that thing in the garage.

Big twins vibrate. I've had screws and nuts vibrate loose on several of my superbikes. Gotta check 'em regularly, but even then...

I had a TR-6. That was after your TR4. Mine had an IL6. Did you have a 4 or a 4A. I ended up trading mine even up for a dirt bike. The guy that got my 6 had a friend drive into the ocean.

I should have driven mine into the ocean too.  It was a straight-axled with lever shocks white 4.  The 4A and the 5P had the protozoan IRS that was later matured into the 6.  I dreamed of a 6 with 3 Weber DCOEs.  Everything vibrated and fell off that car.  I even had the wire wheels to sink even more time tuning/fixing it.  Amazing how much better cars are these days.

The tank rod imo is useless total waste of time... on a side note I don't get the TR statement  :-\

British motorcycles and cars were notorious for disassembling themselves hence an old saying..... Triumph!  We make Mechanics out of ordinary men!!

[laugh]  My brother had a BSA 500 single.  That think was ALWAYS broken/something rattling loose.  He would regularly get uber-pissed off at it.  Once he pushed it into the yard and said to me, "it's YOURS!"  Unfortunately, I couldn't pick it up to lay claim.   :P

Guy I knew, in the 70s, was sleeping with a waitress/bartender whose husband (and who he was acquainted with) worked nights.  Later that summer, the guy bought the husband's TR-6.....guess who got screwed in the end  ;D

As for the electrical systems on the early english cars, the epithet "Lucas-prince of darkness" was not earned without merit.
As it happens my brother is trying to find himself a TR6 at the moment and horror of horrors he is thinking of selling his 750 sport to fund it. ( his medical condition does prevent him from doing much riding so there is some forgiveness there I suppose)

My Step Dad had a 1971 TR-6 years ago and he let me drive it a few times.  It really is a great driver's car with a timeless design.  I loved it and they aren't difficult to work on or get sorted out as his was.  He didn't have the wire wheels and he stored it during the winter.  About the only thing I remember him doing to it was replacing the top.
