Title: Dented front rim
Post by: kuzemko on May 20, 2012, 08:35:54 AM
So my 2010 696 has a small dent in the front rim. Long story short, a 4x4 piece of wood head on at about 60 will jolt you a little. I'm having trouble finding a used one for sale anywhere and I've heard a ton of conflicting answers about whether or not I can even ride it in the mean time. After it happened and I rode home, I felt no vibration, wonkiness, nothing. Everything felt as it did before. The bead is not effected and it still holds air just fine. Does anybody have any suggestions on where to find a used wheel? eBay was out unless I wanted a back wheel. And the local shop told me it would be $1,100. I laughed and said no thanks. Here is a link to the dent. Aside from riding it home, I haven't rode her since. I really want to and I miss her, but I don't know enough about this and don't want to end up testing my gear.

Quick turn around and great work:

Can you get away with it?  Probably.  Worth the risk?  Up to you.  Ive seen wheels like that hold air no problem.  I also once followed someone with a wheel like that.  All of a sudden, after about an hour of riding, he came to a rather erratic quick stop.  We hammered the wheel straight (sort of) and continued the journey.

Yeah, I mean, I'm decently worried about it losing air while riding. It's always possible, and when you've only got 2 wheels, each one is exponentially more important. Especially your front wheel. I just hate watching so much good weather go by without being able to enjoy it. Thanks for the link, I will definitely get working on that after next payday.

I wouldn't ride that until it's fixed.  Cheaper insurance is to have it fixed than hospital bills.
