Title: Monster rear brakes don't feel right
Post by: Pentacleus on May 28, 2012, 10:01:49 AM
Hi all -

I have a 2012 Monster EVO 1100.  Fantastic bike.  Recently I've noticed that it feels like my rear brakes have faded.  It's as if I push on the rear brakes and it doesn't apply to enough pressure to the disc.  I have to push fairly hard to get it to do what I want.

To paint a picture, I used to have to push down half an inch to get x amount of braking.  Now, it barely brakes until I push a full inch or inch and a half, then it kicks (kind of all at once) in and I get x amount of braking.

The bike has 6k miles.  The pads wear indicator look good.  Disc visually look good.

It's almost as if it needs adjustment, but as far as I know, there is not a way to adjust disc brakes.  I've thought about putting sanding paper on the pads and resurface them.  Perhaps something slick got on them?  I don't know.  I'm just scratching my head.

I also have a close friend with a hypermotard who is having a similar issue.

Thanks
Josh

We all have that issue - more often than not.

Your bike is still under warranty (!) so the dealer will fix it.
Downside is that it will most likely come back....

As far as I know it's a poor rear brake master cylinder.
If you insist, maybe the dealer will replace it....

What he said.
Our rear brakes just suck.
If the bike is under warranty as stated, then have it fixed as many times as you want.
Consider yourself lucky you have great FRONT brakes :/

Simplest solution first: bleed the brakes.

Mine (06 Sport 1000) has the same issue occasionally. I don't know how air gets into the system, but it does. A quick bleed job and it's good for another season.

If that doesn't fix it, then yeah, lean on your dealer.

My dealer told me that they have had some success fixing this with a Hyper master (?)
