Title: Chain gunk? Oil leak? ('99 750)
Post by: memper on May 29, 2012, 06:46:26 AM
Just changed my sprockets and upon removing the front sprocket it was hard not to notice the INcredible amount of gunk that was built up in the area around the front sprocket. My initial thought was that the material was chain lube build up. It was black and very very sticky and it was toward the bottom of the area (sprocket moving counter clockwise it would throw lube downward). I also noticed small bits of what looked like pieces of an O ring.
But in my research I found that there is a common leak from an engine bolt just north of the sprocket. Could someone plz post a pic of said bolt and what seals I might need to replace?
I plan to thoroughly clean the area to see if and where the possible leak might originate from.
Thanks

Mostly likely it's just chain lube goop - you ever clean out in there before?

I use the Dupont stuff that basically doesn't fling, and there's still some build up around the drive sprocket.

Are you loosing oil? Loosing any clutch fluid? If not... you probably just need to clean.

Chain lube gunks up.  Most of it actually is thrown off and what you're seeing is just where it's caught.

If you clean a chain, it doesn't change it too much.  The main thing is to use one that doesn't sling and to give it time to dry and not to spray too much.

I just got this bike a bit ago. First chain drive and first ducati. Looks like the PO NEVER cleaned that area. Has got to be about 1/8" thick! I'm just slowly going over the bike and checking stuff and changing stuff. It sat unridden for about 2 years before I got it. Will ck the slave cyl later. No oil under the bike so I'm guessing its just some gnarly lube buildup.
Thanks guys
