Title: Replacing Valve Seals. Any Tips?
Post by: SwampMonster on May 30, 2012, 07:25:11 PM
I am going to be replacing the seals some time next week when they get in. Bike is a 95' 900 first ride in almost a year and notices the bike was burning oil after only 20mins this has never happened before. Its happening on deceleration so pretty sure they  are the culprit. just my first time doing this on the Duc looking for any hard earned tips if they are out there. Thanks

If I remember right, decel = valve seals.  Anyhow, I had to replace two of mine when I was messing with the valves.  Essentially, you'll have to go through the whole song and dance of adjusting the valves.  Taking the seals out is easy, replacing them is a bit difficult and tearing them is a possibility.  Purchase a couple extra in case you're having a bad day.  I can't remember exactly how I did it but I remember swearing a lot.

Have you done a valve adjustment before?

Well, looks like you're in luck!  ;D  Study up on the valve adjustment procedure because you'll want to shimmy those valves down to get the seal on.  You'll probably want to do this with the belts off for sake of ease.  Of course, measure your clearances first.  That way, if you need to order shims, you can order both at the same time.  If your belts are old, get those too.

Unfortunately my valves were just adjusted along with new belts. Bad timing gotta love it looking at this as a learing experience.

If all you're doing is replacing the valve seal, you won't have to re-adjust your valves, as long as you put the 1/2 rings back in the same position you took them off. If they're older and you inadvertently flip them, it may throw off your clearances.
You'll need to find a piece of plastic, like a straw, and cover the valve stem to keep it from tearing the seal as you slide it on. The end of the valve stem and where the 1/2 rings fit will have a sharp edge and cut the rubber on the seal if you don't cover them.
As far as the seal itself, IIRC, make sure the lip on the seal seats in the groove on the guide. A good push down will pop it right in.
