Title: 1100 EVO engine rattle/noise and delay holding revs at idle
Post by: ashleyf on June 01, 2012, 04:54:03 AM
I know that Ducati engines are supposed to have a few noises and mechanical noise but i have noticed now that i have done a few more miles (currently 3500) that i have developed a new very annoying one. >:( When the engine is cold or at a lower temp it does not seem to be there. However when warmer 3/4 bars in temp gauge, there is a rattle like noise a loose cover at about 3000 ish revs. It is more noticeable on a decrease in revs. It does this when in gear or in neutral. I notice it more when decreasing speed and typically in third gear. I had thought that is could be a clutch, gearbox issue, but i am sure the noise is there out or gear also. It is very annoying. The dealer has said it is normal, [bang] but it was not there before?? It is strange that it is at about 3000 revs. My thought is that is just the right rev range to set the reverberation causing the noise. It seems to get louder and more noticeable the hotter the engine gets.  Has anyone else heard this?

Additionally also when hot the engine holds revs on deceleration. What i mean by this it that it i totally take off all the throttle the idle speed is higher and there is quite a delay before settling to the correct lower idle. Again anyone had this issue?

No ideas anyone? I am going to take it to my dealer next week as that is the earliest they can fit me in.

Welcome ashleyf  [thumbsup]

Mate, its a pretty helpful bunch around here... but its also pretty difficult to fault find a rattle over the internets  :-\

Could be a loose..... anything  :-\

My M1100s has a dry clutch, so I dont notice any (other) rattles  [laugh].

And your throttle return (or lack of).....  when the bike is warm, standing in neutral if you blip the throttle, the throttle tube itself snaps "home" and the revs take a while to tale off??   Could be cable adjustment....

Even the wet clutches rattle a bit, just minor compared to the dry clutches.  Have you heard any other monsters or can the dealer start one up for you?  Duc's just tend to be noisy creatures in general.

And how high of a idle are we talking about here?  Like a racing idle or just a tad over normal?  If it's just a tad I would chalk it up to nothing special... unless you are talking about engine braking?  If you're coming from a I4, twins have a lot more engine braking which you'll notice on decel and will keep the revs up higher if youre in a lower gear.

Thanks for the replys guys. I can appreciate that a rattle can be hard to diagnose but I thought I would see of anyone had heard of anything similar. It is more noticeable when in gear and hotter so I am guessing it could be clutch related.

The throttle is holding revs when stationary and put of gear. I have been told this could be that the ecu throttle/fuelling parameters need resetting but it is weird this is more noticeable when hot.

Ok been to the dealers today. They have fixed a problem I did not know I had with the rear brake. But they have confirmed that there is indeed an odd noise which is good news??? The bad bit is they don't know what it is and I am going to have to wait 6-7 weeks before they can book it in for an engine strip down to determin the problem!! This is not so good as although I an use it the next 6 weeks is not really going to be that enjoyable. God know what they will find or what is wrong with it???

The receptionist could not really tell me that much but I will get a debrief tomorrow when I collect it. I love my monster but it does not really inspire confidence for long term ownership :(

What are your lemon laws there? UK? Here after three occurrences with no resolution or 30 days out of service and you get a new one.

Mine did this also for a short time after having the termi race ecu installed but it corrected itself over time.

I don't think our lemon laws are as robust. I am going to have a word with them today and see what they say. It is not the same dealer as where it was bought from so I might ask for a report and take it to them maybe, but a Ducati dealer is a Ducati dealer and hopefully I will get as good service.
