Rear activates the brake light, hand lever does not.
What I have done recently:
-installed clip ons (which included taking off the brake switch to detangle the wire). Could it be on upside down or something?
-installed led signals and capped off the wires to the dash (turn indicator bulb)
-installed aftermarket headlight (direct hook up)
-currently the dash is removed for painting. Could this have something to do with it?
What is going on? Any ideas?
did you lose the little "brake switch activation thingy?" It is a little tiny piece of metal that lives in the hole in the lever mount, and runs away at the slightest provocation.
Year, make and model of bike?

'99 Monster Dark 750
oh no! thats probably it! It was kinda dark when I took it off. Any pics or drawings I could see so I know what to look for? If I dont find it, where to get?
It's a small cylinder, ~4mm diameter and ~4mm long, from memory.
And actually, they're black plastic.
If you're moderately handy, you could make one.
Or get one from a dealer.

Ah... see, I lost mine, so it is now metal... a piece of welding rod, actually.

I
think they're only available with the switch from the dealer.
Ok. So about 4mm in length yeah?
You are correct ducpainter

The switch is somewhat adjustable so 4mm should work.

On my KTM, same master as a 620, it's got a DIY switch activation dohicky. Mines made from hard plastic
I used a pencil eraser from a mechanical pencil. cut it down with an exacto, it's about 4mm thick
soft damp
Have you checked the connections? Follow the (switch) line down to the main harness. There is a bullet connection there that usually comes apart on mine.
Connector is fine. Im certain I lost the pin. I do stuff like that all the time. Like when i removed the choke from the carbs on my suzuki and the spring went flying across the room :P
I used a spring from a clicker pen to rig it.
Thanks for the tips!
Took the lever off (just the lever-just as before, and not the hinge part). I looked in the hole where the little spring goes and there appeared to be something in there. A ball perhaps, I dunno...pushed on it andit didnt go in. Is it supposed to?
I really don understand whats happened. The wires to the switch were not messed with at all.
I did takeoff the tiny switch with the (teeny weeny screws) to untangle it. Is the pin that was talked about in that area? Or on the lever part?
I'm not sure what you took apart, but what you want to do is remove the switch. Do not loose the screws and nuts. Buying replacement screws and nuts will not be easy. Also be careful not to loose the dowel if it is still there. The switch will have a plunger. across from the plunger is the dowel. The dowel presses on the plunger when the lever is released. When you squeeze the lever the plunger is allowed to release, allowing the switch to close, and the brake light lights. release the lever, the dowel presses against the plunger, the switch opens, the light shuts off.
Go here http://www.ducati.com/services/maintenance/index.do (http://www.ducati.com/services/maintenance/index.do) and look up 2001 Monster 750. Go to page 66. The dowel is #3 in the illustration.
The switch is adjusted by loosening the screws and moving the switch until you find the position where the light is off when the lever is released and on when the lever is squeezed.
Sometimes the dowel can stick. Try some wd-40 to see if you can free it.
You can test switch operation while it's out by manually pushing on the switch plunger.
Heres a pic of the area im talking about. @Howie, I see #3 and how it could possibly fall out when removing the switch (#5). I guess my spring must be #2 from the diagram.

Is there something in that "hole" that should be moving? Or is it just a stopper for the spring?
I'll take theswitch and look it over again. Sorry for making such a small thing into a two pager... :P
It was missing. Did the eraser head method. All is well! Thank you DMF!
