I have a 2003 620
Our house burned down, and the red key with the metal code was salvaged, but the black key I used all the time was either burned or scooped up in the muck out.
We have a detached garage, so my bike and everything in the garage was saved.
My local Ducati dealer tells me that even though I have the red key (and the metal code thing) that I need a "program card" to make copies of the red key in order to get more keys made.
Is this correct? What are my other options. I am in austin Tx
Sorry to hear about your house.
For keys, contact SOS Diagnostics. They have a good reputation and can do pretty much everything including replacement code cards: http://sosdiagnostics.com/Ducati.html (http://sosdiagnostics.com/Ducati.html)
if the red key is functional then you need two new black keys, as there has to be at least 3 coded. but nothing apart from the red key is needed to start the coding procedure.
the red key is functional, it is what I am riding the bike with right now... but I want to make copies as it is my only copy.
And I thought what you are saying (Brad Black) was the case, but my dealer says they still need the code card.
I thought older monsters didn't even have a code card (my bike is an 2003). When I bought my bike, I honestly don't know if it came with a code card or not.
Is the dealer miss understanding, or telling me the truth? anyone?
I am kinda scared to ship off the only key I have in the mail. argh.
thanks for your condolences D3vi@nt. We have rebuilt on the old slab, and the new house is even better than the old house!
See: http://advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=752104 (http://advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=752104) for pics.
All Monsters '02 and later (non-696/796/1100) have the code card and immobilizer.
I haven't the faintest idea why the dealer is saying they need the code card, other than possibly some legal crapola.
You don't need to ship your red key anywhere.
Purchase two (blank/uncut) black keys, either from a dealer or SOS or whomever.
Take your red key and the two black keys to a local key-cutter.
I'd recommend a genuine locksmith, as the folks at the big-box hardware stores don't seem to understand the equipment all that well...
Get the keys cut to match the red one, then test to make sure they physically work the locks.
Then 'code' the two black keys.
Thanks!
I am not doing too good at searching... can you provide a link to steps on how to code the keys after I get them cut.
nevermind, I think I found it.
1. there should be at least two BLACK KEYS and a RED one.
2. you put your RED key to ignition, TURN ON and OFF very quickly
3. you have to make a second TURN ON and OFF with red key (while turned on you will see that the screen will begin to count from 25 to 0).
4.When you see it counting down, immidiately take out the RED key and put the first BLACK key.
5. in a very quick way, TURN ON and OFF the with the balck key. (do not wait the gauges sweep- just turn on and off very quick,) on the screen you will see it shows "2" wich means second key.
6. take off the first black key and then put the second black key. TURN ON and OFF again very quickly(as you did one step ago). screen should display "3" and every time you insert a new black key it should count down from 25 to 0 again.
7. finaly you take out the second black key and put the RED KEY again. TURN ON and OFF very quickly again. then take out the red key . It should all be done.
keep in mind that when you TURN ON and and TURN OFF any of the keys you should not wait until gauges sweep out.
8. put your new black keys to ignition and turn ÅŸt to ON position. you will see engine led will turn off .
enjoy your new black keys.

If what I posted above works, I don't understand why the dealer said they couldn't do it and that I would have to ship off the red key. hmm.
I'll get two black keys cut tomorrow and try to program them myself, hopefully I am successful.
I bought my bike with only one black key. I cross my fingers every damn day.
Good luck. Hope it works.
I hope one of the solutions above work out for you.
In the meantime, I'm assuming you have home owners insurance, right? If so, in the event that you need some expensive replacment part from Ducati, insurance should help you out.
Best of luck, and sorry for your home. :(
sorry to hear about your home.
as for the dealer saying that........well, find another dealer is my opinion. legal crap or not they didn't seem to answer your question.
I always thought the code card was in case you lost the "RED" key?!? I believe it is just a backup if you lose your red key you can use that at the dealer to get a replacement.
my code card for my 05 s2r has a code and instructions for unlocking the bike if the immobilizer freezes...
the code card is for overriding the immo with the mathesis or dds or using the throttle technique.
there is no provision for being able to get replacement keys for the bike.
Hmm does a 2012 monster come with a red key? I only received two black ones and the code card. Should i be headin down to the dealer snd getting my key?
No red key on your 2012.

No. 8) You get two chipped keys and a code card which number you might want to hide in several places as you're screwed if you lose it. Use of that number and the answer to your question is in your owners manual. Got one of those? ;)
Yup got all that. The dealer had.photocopied the card which i wasn't happy about and had them throw it out. I've got copies stored in about 4 places. I was just worried i was suppose to get another key, phew!! This being new to the entire owning a bike instead of beg borrow steal rent all the time is a heck of a lot better.earning lots though from the forum!!
Can't hurt to have the dealer make a copy unless you really think they are sleazy... My dealer did that for their files, but I have a red key so the card is useless alone.
True enough, i jut don't like anyone being able to have access to making keys without my knowledge. They aren't sleazy by any means(actually good shop) i just don't trust anyone with stuff like that, i feel like it is giving someone my cc number to hold onto just incase. Probably from watching to many car theft movies I guess.
got blanks from Ducati and had them keyed to match my red.
What I posted above did not work to program the black keys.
Wanted to post this follow up so no one waste money on blanks like I just did.
From what I understand, there is no one in Austin that can program a black key from a red key without the code card.
If anyone knows how to program a black key from a red without using the code card, I would welcome your input.
Try it this way:

I ran into the same problem. The manual is wrong - maybe an old procedure - my display didn't have the countdown either. Brad Black gave his procedure and it worked for me.
"red key in. turn on. turn off within a second or so. fit original black key. repeat. fit new black key. repeat. refit red key. repeat. turn on with red key and leave on for 15 or so seconds. turn off for at least a minute. fit black key and start.
make sure you only have one key near the ignition at once."
Two black keys - no more no less - or I couldn't get it to work. I think the first part - when turning the red key on, you need to wait until a light blinks but that should happen within the second or so before turning it off.

yes, the procedure you had posted was wrong. putting the red key in twice at the start is wrong. if the bike is coded the countdown doesn't start until the first black key goes in. and leave the keys on for a second or so, not just on/off as fast as you can.
and there is no way to make keys from a code card. it has no relevance to making keys. but you sound like the paranoid type.
Maybe the difference between Brad's scenario and mine is he had a red key and an original black key.
I have a red key and two new unprogrammed black keys.
I have tried it several times and I can not get it to work. If it is supposed to work, I don't know what I am doing wrong.
could be an issue. i've never programmed from a red key only that i can remember. done lots of new dash and new ecu stuff, but not 2 new blacks that i can recall.
but i can't see why it won't work. the theory is that it will, this is what the whole red key thing is based on.
from the manual:
Programming the immobilizer
If needed, the immobilizer is
programmed as follows.
- Check that the battery terminals are
connected correctly.
- Remove the three keys from the key
ring (1).
Caution
When inserting a key in the keyoperated
switch, keep the other keys
away or they may prevent correct
programming.
Caution
For correct programming, be
sure to perform each step of the
procedure within the specified timing
and observe the instructions closely.
The word OFF appearing on the
display (4) while programming the
immobilizer indicates that
programming procedure has been
aborted.
Insert the red key (2) into the keyoperated
switch (3) and turn the
switch to “Onâ€.
Note
The switch must stay in the
“Off†position for at least 30 seconds
before it is turned to “Onâ€.
The instrument panel display (4)
shows how many keys you have
inserted and a countdown from 30 to
zero at the side.
The number of inserted keys changes
depending on the type of
programming. When the instrument
panel is programmed for the first time
from new, a number “1†is displayed.
When a key is re-programmed, the
display will show number “2â€.
Note
When the new instrument
panel is used to program a new key,
the countdown starts the moment
the red key is inserted.
When re-programming a key, the
countdown begins when the black
key is inserted.
Make sure countdown has begun,
and turn the switch to “Off†before it
reaches 0 (you have about 3 seconds
time).
Remove the red key, insert a black
key (5) and set the switch to “Onâ€
within the next 15 seconds (display
shows the number of keys inserted,
in this instance 2, with the
countdown from 30 to 0 at the side).
Make sure countdown has begun,
and turn the switch to “Off†before it
reaches 0.
Remove the black key, insert the
other black key (6) and set the switch
to “On†within the next 15 seconds
(display shows the number of keys
inserted, in this instance 3, with the
countdown from 30 to 0 at the side).
Make sure countdown has begun,
and turn the switch to “Off†before it
reaches 0.
Remove the black key, insert the red
key and set the switch to “On†within
the next 15 seconds (display shows
the number of keys inserted, in this
instance 4, with the countdown from
30 to 0 at the side).
When countdown is over, the word
“On†appears to indicate
acknowledgement. The word “Offâ€
means programming failed.
Note
The instrument panel LED (A)
flashes to indicate successful
programming.
Wait at least 30 seconds before
setting the switch to “On†again.
Check for correct immobilizer
programming as described in the
following paragraphs and then refit
the three keys in the ring.
There are locksmiths out there who have equipment to clone keys.
Howie, I asked the locksmith about cloning the keys when I had them cut, ( he had a machine and advertised as able to clone automobile transponders) and he had some term for it, but it amounted to the red key is not cloneable, but the black keys were.
My dealer said that SOS can clone the red key, but they have to use there own proprietary keys.
Thanks for the exact verbage from the manual Brad. Still not sure why I am unsuccessful but ... This is no longer a big deal now because the previous owner of the bike responded to my email and he thinks he found the other black key. Wow after over three years, that is cool! Funny thing is he said he found it right after christmas (our fire was on Dec 27th) he found it about the same time my black key was destroyed. ha. When I bought the bike I guess it came from him with one black and one red, but he originally had two blacks... and he thinks he found the one he never gave me. He said it has to be because it is a Ducati key and it does not fit the ducati he replaced my bike with.
When I get that black key, I will use it in conjunction with the red key to try to clone the blank keys I bought.

Thanks for the info! I have to do this soon. So it won't work unless you program 2 black ones? It can't be one? I have my red key and one uncut black key. So I was going to get a locksmith to cut the black key from the red, then program the black one. But if I am required to have 2 black keys, can I clone the black one that I already have to make two black ones? Then get both cut? And then do the programming?

Get your new uncut black key cut to match the red or black key.
You can use your virgin black key, along with the programmed black key, and the red key, to go through the process.
Ok, I guess where I'm confused is where it says I have to enter the second black key for it to work. What if I just try using one? Will the process not complete I guess?
I have the red key and only one black key. So I would have to buy another ducati key uncut or have a locksmith clone it, if that's possible.
It won't work with just one black key.
The above procedure:

This procedure will work for one red and 3 black keys, just did it for a customer.
Two black keys were the originals, and the additional one was a brand new key.
Why would anyone have to go thru this torture. My '01 M750 Ducati doesn't have this issue. Where is technology taking us?
To HELL!
