I replaced my front and rear brakes today with EBC HH pads. the fronts work great. I was out riding after the replacement and was going in a little hot into a corner and used my rear brake to help adjust and the brake started howling, putting out harmoincs that I heard and felt through the brake pedel. I pulled over and checked and found the rear rotor starting to grove. I kept driving just not using the rear brake at all. did I use a to aggressive pad for the rear. obviously I am going to order factory rear pads tomorrow and a new rotor. maybe even send ebc an email! I have always used ebc for brakes on my rd400 that I use for track days and have never had any problems.
id look into it further before buying a new rotor and pads!!
wheres a photo? how big is the groove? are u sure it wasnt there before? have u pulled the caliper off and checked if there is some junk caught in the surface of the pad?
ya I took the caliper off. the groves are not bad and probably will smooth out. I called my dealer and they have rear oem pads in stock. I am going to pick them up in a few days. the noise I get when using the rear brake is like when you are resurfacing a car rotor and it starts to chatter and resonates real bad. I never experianced anything like this before on a motorcycle
Did you make sure the rear piston is moving freely in the caliper ?
Perhaps this may be of use -

i had a new rear rotor and EBC pads and my rear was starting to pull tight then release ,rebled them and gave it more free play and cured it , got a few grooves too but im sure it will be fine keep it clean dude air it out and wipe it clean with windex on a rag .
thanks for the info, but the pistons mve free and is clean of any crud. I am pretty sure now thAT the pad is at fault. maybe something went wrong when it was being made. I will give an update when I pick up the new pads and give them a try either tonight or tomorrow.
I put on a set of the EBC GG pads on the rear and the noise and chatter is gone. I asked at the dealer and was told that the HH pads should not be used on the rear because the rotor is so small and the pad is not desighned for street use.
Really? Ive been using them for about 48K miles now.
ya it was odd to hear that from him also because I have used them for years on my other bikes but my problem is gone and I drove 80 miles on the eway today with no problems or noises. I kept the HH pads on the front and they are fine
