"Ducati North America is recalling 375 units of the Panigale because of an incorrect screw was used to attach the rear swingarm to the rear suspension linkage. The faulty screw could cause the swingarm to detach from the linkage, which would in-turn could cause a catastrophic suspension collapse."

That's no cranky coil... collapsed rear suspension is bad hu-du

You would think, just maybe, that someone on the assembly line would say something like "Hey, this isn't the right screw" or "Hey, this screw won't work" ---- but, in today's world it doesn't come as a big surprise. 

Wonder if the manufacture dates for those bikes falls after the earth quake...

Not surprising.  Though it is good to see a formal recall.

1997 748s had rear wheel spindles that could possibly fail, a recall was sent out.

Funny that something like a leaking gas tank over a hot engine didn't warrant a written recall in Ducati's book.   [roll]

The P isn't necessarily hated.  We do, however, like to call it as we see it here. There are a few who would disagree but not all of us think that everything Ducati makes is divine creation.   [laugh]

How do you know that anyone could tell it was 'wrong' just by looking at it?

The guy that runs Ducati NA's technical training program told me that "Ducati nailed it with the Panigale".

I haven't ridden one, but this guy knows what he's talking about.

The Diavel on the other hand belongs with the Indiana... ;)

It was probably the wrong spec screw

like an 8.8 was used instead of a 12.9

or a black steel was used instead of a yellow alloy.

it was probably not obvious in any way.

I would love a Panigale. they are awesome looking.

oh, you'd be surprised...

I recall years ago, a part was assembled with screws that had the wrong countersink angle. same thd, same mat'l, stock numbers matched, but the wrong screws were in that box. what wrench monkey is going to pull out a protractor to check the countersink angle of a whole box of screws?

if someone would be willing to part with their 1199 at a decent price, I would not hesitate.

The Panigale is a tremendous machine.... for someone to say they hate it has certainly never ridden it..

I dig it, but i would rather buy an 1198 base and mod it....



Personally, Ducati stopped making motorcycles i'd buy when they did away with the trellis frame....

Found out mine has the bad bolt/screw.  :P I also discovered the dealer cracked the windscreen when prepping it. Oh well, I guess the 600 mile won't be the "first" service.

Been hearing from dealers that the windscreen is a royal PITA to fit on the 1199.  As in, you have to diassemble and remove the whole headlight assembly in order to fit it on... The dealer I spoke to in the end just started to glue those two front screws in instead. 

Yep, kind of a pain. You don't need to remove the headlight assembly but you do need to remove the headlight fairing to get to the two front screws. Mine is cracked where they mounted the mirrors. Contacted the dealer and it's already ordered. I'm gonna wait until they have the new bolt and have them do the recall item, the windscreen, and wrap the header at the same time.

I'm in Bangkok right now for a couple of weeks and the owner of the Ducati dealership down the street lives in my building and his new pani is sitting there on the way to my car every morning... And I have to say that walking past it everyday is giving me some bad thoughts... Expensive thoughts. Haha

So I need to keep on hearing reasons to not get it yet... Threads like this are important. Haha, my plan is still to wait a couple of years as the first gen bugs are worked out before jumping in.

There can be as many as a dozen minor recall items on any given model.

You can register at NHTSA to have emails sent to you for a given manufacturer or model.

I think the 999 had about 20, the S2R models around 6-8 or so. 

Just like the plastic tank problem, the manufacturer cannot know all the problems they will encounter -- and if someone in the factory puts a wrong screw in a wrong box, then they just recall and replace it.

That's all they can do.

But if you want to be enlightened, go to the NHTSA home page and search for any model of car, truck or bike and see how many recalls there are.  You would be surprised.  Most people don't know because they either do not register with their dealer or they buy a used vehicle and don't register with their dealer.  Every dealer has a card or address to register for recall notices when you buy a used car. 

I picked up my VW Golf used -- VW is very good about finding second owners.  I took it to the dealer for service and they immediately registered me without saying anything, I got a notice in the mail from VW USA -- and a list of recall items, including the glow plugs.  $800 of work, free.

I saw both the bolts side by side. totally identical except the updated one looks "nicer".

put 8.8 screws in the 12.9 box?

hard to say as they appear to be very specific to the application.  as there is nothing visible to distinguish them (other than the new one looking shiny) i would imagine it was just a case of them being too soft. perhaps something that they discovered under the long term testing. similar to the m1100 evo rear wheel recall due to "stress fractures" appearing on the 50,000 mile bench test.
