Title: '12 version of Dupont Teflon lube changed. Worse according to WBW.
Post by: thought on June 21, 2012, 02:51:15 AM
Just read up on this and thought you guys should know since a lot of us use it:

http://www.webbikeworld.com/t2/dupont-motorcycle-chain-lube-2012/ (http://www.webbikeworld.com/t2/dupont-motorcycle-chain-lube-2012/)

TLDR version is that the new formulation of the dry wax teflon stuff we all used has gone the way of the cuckoo.  The new stuff doesnt work as well and if you happen to see a bottle of the old stuff lying around (that says "dry wax" on it)... buy them up.

If you want to stick to using the dupont stuff the chain specific lube should be the same, but wont apply as thin as the older stuff.

I'll have to try to gather up some of the older/original version blue cans.

Use the new yellow cans.  Stronger wax than the blue can.

Reference the link WBW link - they reference their own previous reviews/info

Don't know about 'stronger' but thicker for sure....

A quick search shows that Walmart carries the yellow can for $6.95. The blue was $5.05 at Lowes. I'll try a can of the yellow and see if I'm thrilled. The new blue doesn't fling much, is still o-ring safe and does a decent job of washing the chain as you lube. Yellow may be better but my jury is still out. (MAN do I HATE Walmart!)

The lowes close to me only has the squeeze bottle of the chain saver and it seems to work ok... Only prob is that I like the sprays better to blast off some of the crud.

But, overall, using the bottle of chain saver didn't seem to have much noticeable diff for me btwn the old blue.  Went on pretty much the same and seemed to dry about the same... I'm going to try to find some spray versions but I would say get the yellow if you're out of the blue

I appreciate the heads up. I just switched from Motul lube to Dupont a month ago and grabbed a can of each. So far I've only used the chain saver, so I guess the other will be for squeaky doors.

Even Lowes.com is showing the new blue cans... so one might be able to find some older stock on shelves, but it's looking like yeller cans are the way of the future.

And Lowes.com does not show the yellow cans  >:(. It was nice to get it from lowes as it was $5 a can...

"$8.99 + $6.75 shipping   ouch."

I agree.  That's if you buy one can.  Shipping was $9.35 for a box of six cans.  Oh, and each can was 2 bucks cheaper too!

Lots of Bounty towels. Hope you have a rear stand.  ;) The "Blue" will remove a lot of the crap as it goes on.

A little is OK. Is the chain THAT dirty? The Blue does a fair job of cleaning as it goes on. Your choice.

If you have a few days, just dip the chain in ATF fluid.  Does a great job cleaning crud.  Then you can rinse it in kero to kill the smell, then coat in DuPont.  Piece 'o cake!

I used to remove the chain and soak it too, but Chris at ca-cycleworks recommends just flooding the chain with lube, which floats off crud.

with an o-ring chain, that's sufficient.  removing it and immersing it is overkill imho.  dirt doesn't get into the oring.

papertowls to catch overspray, spray to soak the section of chain, move wheel, repeat.

let it sit overnight to drip of excess.

Update on Walmart. Check the store inventory on-line before you go. Hit one big one on Monday and they were clueless. Well..., they are ALL clueless. Found another Walmart on-line, the only one out of 5 in the Richmond, VA area which had inventory. Near the Auto section there is a tiny motorcycle section. Found three cans of Chain Saver @ $6.95 each there and cleaned 'em out! Just check before you take a long drive. ANYTHING is 30+ miles for me as I'm out in the sticks.  8) Took the car as Richmond set a new record of 103 F today! Wuffff...

... Record high temperature set at Richmond VA...

A record high temperature of 103 degrees was set at Richmond VA at
203 PM today. This breaks the old record of 101 degrees set in 1980.
