Title: drive chain adjustment
Post by: JamminScrt on June 21, 2012, 12:27:39 PM
Ok, sorry guys....I'm a new Ducati owner and have to ask a few simple questions ('cause the "Owner's Manual" is CRAP!)....

To adjust the drive chain do I :

#1 Loosen the real axle nuts? I bought the $40 dollar 41/46 mm socket and tried, but the bolts are SOOOO tight, I couldn't lossen 'em (yes I took out the snap rings)....

#2 I know the "pinch bolts" at the end of the swingarm have to be lossened, but can't find the torque values to re-tighten them.....

#3 I bought the spanner wrench to turn the axle, but it also won't loosen even after the "pinch bolts" are loosened....is that 'cause the axle bolts haven't been
     loosened?

#4 Which bolt under the motor drains the motor oil? There are two and the CRAPPY Owner's Manual doesn't say which.....

I have been riding motorcycles for 45 years and have done all of my basic maintenance for all of those years! None of these questions would be even necessary if the Owner's Manual didn't tell you to take the bike to a dealer for such routine tasks.....Jeez! I'm not trying put their mechanincs out of a job, but I should be able to tighten my own drive chain!

Thanks for the help!

1. You don't have to loosen either the sprocket (41) or wheel (46) side nuts to adjust chain. They are something like 110/130 ft.lbs respectively, so no wonder you probably can't break them without a big breaker bar.

2. The pinch bolts on the swingarm DO have to be loosened. When retightening, the torque is 23ft.lbs, in a 1-2-1 sequence. So tighten 1, tighten 2, then retighten 1 and leave.

3. The concentric hub should rotate freely with the tool once the swingarm bolts are loosened.

4. On the newest monsters, it is likely a 5mm allen towards the left-rear side under the oil pan. The 5mm allen bolt is 20Nm when retightening.
