Title: Re: rearranging the garage.... Post by: ducatiz on June 24, 2012, 06:43:15 PM Details on the BMW? 1952 R51/3 Needs minor work, magneto and engine was rebuilt by me. Needs new carbs to run. Brakes are good, but I would get new perches and cables. Whopping 25hp. Turning radius is about 180m Title: Re: rearranging the garage.... Post by: ducatiz on June 24, 2012, 06:43:48 PM You need a dealer plate. 8) I rarely sell anything... about half of the stuff on the shelves I brought over from Italy on one of our holidays there. Title: Re: rearranging the garage.... Post by: ducatiz on June 24, 2012, 06:54:18 PM I've always wanted an older R bike... They are good for shows and that' about it. Riding it would be terrifying if you could go over 50mph. it steers like a VW bus. Title: Re: rearranging the garage.... Post by: Curmudgeon on June 24, 2012, 07:24:53 PM I've always wanted an older R bike... Want another hobby? [roll] They start to get good (for cruising) with an R90S and R90/6 as long as you fit an electronic ignition. Cute too with large tank and Euro bars. /7 addresses some of that "old school" stuff but less cute.Mild suspension fixes well-understood. Maybe some old geezer has a clean one somewhere. Keep your eyes peeled. Bob's BMW in MD knows most of the old stuff. I toyed with the idea of a 90/6 for putting around when I retired but opted for an EFi T-100 as it was just easier and as reliable as a stone ax. Had to still spend quite a bit on suspension. They're horrible stock. The R90/6 was rideable out of the box but "floaty". Good for bad backroad though. Also takes time to get used to 8" of front suspension unless you grew up with that! ;) Title: Re: rearranging the garage.... Just teasing about the amount of stuff you have accumulated. most of it is related to a bike i have. spares and engine stuff. but some is crazy shit. i have full 851 exhaust kit. nope, never had an 851, but it was NOS and i want an 851 someday.. :-) Title: Re: rearranging the garage.... Post by: Dirty Duc on June 24, 2012, 09:20:19 PM So, the real question: Since there is no way you can have time to ride all those, can I borrow one when I come back east? [evil]
Title: Re: rearranging the garage.... Post by: lethe on June 24, 2012, 11:49:42 PM I feel your pain.
I keep everything too, the difference is that most stuff I have is junk. When I got my house, I thought wow a 2100 sq ft garage, I'll never have to worry about room in that. Nope, filled with junk now! [laugh] Title: Re: rearranging the garage.... Post by: ungeheuer on June 25, 2012, 03:02:05 AM The Darmah.
I want it [drool] Title: Re: rearranging the garage.... Post by: ducatiz on June 25, 2012, 04:25:56 AM The Darmah. I want it [drool] It's going. 1980 Darmah SS Plenty of extra goodies.. PO put a period-correct SD top triple with bars on it, so you can swap between clipons or bars with the original triple. extra tach, spare oil screen, lots of carb goodies.. it has the Pescaras on and I have a spare set of cored Silentiums. THe original SS came with the Silentiums installed for noise laws and the Contis in a box. Original airboxes. Seatpan is original but the seat is a monopost style Corbin custom seat. Comes with period Koni shocks and factory stainless lines, period 280mm floaters. The red color scheme was a one-year deal they did in 1980 for the last run. The SS came in blue, black or red, but the last year they only had them in red or black. Title: Re: rearranging the garage.... Post by: BerettaMato on June 25, 2012, 05:40:57 AM There are worst hobby's you could have. I was the same way with Computer stuff. Just sold it all and now starting my Ducati collection. I really want a old one to work and lean on any recommendation something low budget.

You can find a Darmah or a springhead 860 for around 6000-8000 depending on condition, but the prices go up every year. Plus, parts are scarce and pricey. A lot of people are buying these bikes and just tearing them down because the parts cost is 2-3x the cost of a whole bike. I was tempted to do that with my Darmah SS but I can't. I could get around 10-12k for the parts alone. The engine is in excellent shape and still has the wire seal... the guy who is buying it will be buried with it... Title: Re: rearranging the garage.... Post by: BerettaMato on June 25, 2012, 07:16:52 AM I was thinking 70's - 80's naked of course. Maybe $6k all in when done. Does not have to have big motor just fun around town.

Post by: BerettaMato on June 25, 2012, 07:34:36 AM Love the first one I have a soft spot for smaller CC's bikes. What is the best way to find one like that. What should I be looking for Good and Bad?
Title: Re: rearranging the garage.... Post by: Curmudgeon on June 25, 2012, 07:42:34 AM As far as I can recall, naked Pantahs weren't imported here by Berliner, only larger bevel twins in the late '70's and early 80's. Not a ton of those either. That TL ducatiz must have imported? Or someone else did? Big singles I recall here but no parallel twins.

This would be a dream come true for me. I know it is sold but something like it is what I would want. i could ride it to the Steamboat, CO. my first bike was a Ducati Bronco. I love those singles, I wish they'd make a modern one. Title: Re: rearranging the garage.... Post by: Curmudgeon on June 25, 2012, 08:11:42 AM My TL and my GTL both have a Berliner VIN plate. Interesting! Then the three dealers I used at the time just never bothered with them. Title: Re: rearranging the garage.... Post by: BerettaMato on June 25, 2012, 08:23:33 AM Ya I will have to learn more and talk to some collectors and vintage owners. I think this would be a good investment for my tax return. I could have a lot of fun with one. Thanks for the input and let me know if you come across one for sale.

Yeah, my 1983 TL has a Berliner plate and a 7 digit VIN. I thought the full length VINs were required on motorcycles after 1981.... Title: Re: rearranging the garage.... Well..., with Berliner, anything is possible. ;) The place was just a hole-in-the-wall to begin with and was mostly empty unless they had just gotten in 50 - 100 crated bikes. Cosmo in Hatboro was similar, both mom-and-pops. ;) I can even see a case where Berliner might have just cut a plate for a friend to make DMV easier on a bike which was privately imported. Just one of those mysteries. Reno might recall because he was working there at the time but everybody else is long gone. Title: Re: rearranging the garage.... I got a letter from Ducati for this bike after I got it -- they said it was a US spec bike from the factory. There you have it... I needed the letter because the seller had it registered as a 1976 model ??? Title: Re: rearranging the garage.... Good restorations can be sink holes, so I hope you have deep pockets if you want the end result to look anything like this! http://www.ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=20478.msg959587#msg959587 (http://www.ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=20478.msg959587#msg959587) Title: Re: rearranging the garage.... Post by: Curmudgeon on June 25, 2012, 09:45:32 AM Interesting. Did it have a VA antique plate on it then too? Did watch the owner ride it away. Sounded OK. Nothing like my fully faired 1965 Works factory road racer which ran with only a tail/brake light and a PA plate but nothing else! ;) Somehow never DID get pulled..., which was a miracle. (Frank Kiss who raced Triumphs bought it from me 6 months later when I bought an R26 for long distance. You do crazy stuff when you're 19. ;))

When American Pickers come to your place, please post pics ;D My wife is a devotee of zen/feng shui. We have 1 TV in the house, no coffee or end tables. She won't go into the garage because it wigs her out. On the other hand, my garage is a vintage Ducati goldmine. ;D |
