The weight and cost of the batteries along with the limited range are a huge drawback.
I know this is a homebrew build but predict the batteries will end up in a couple of cars and the rest of the bike in a junkyard. also after looking at the eco impact of battery disposal, manufacturing, and recharging they don't look as green as they did at first. I saw that article too pak, it was interesting but i agree with the eco impact from battery disposal we need to head in another direction.
