Title: My first "incident".... Post by: duke8 on July 06, 2012, 04:34:16 PM Hi all
Well it happened yesterday, just pulled out of the driveway for work... Stopped at a red light in the right lane of a one way street, with the intention of turning right. I was the only one at the lights at that time. Watched in my mirrors as the car behind pulled up safely behind me, all good. Light goes green, after checking both ways, I slowly roll into the intersection , riding the rear brake, waiting for the pedestrians to cross the road on the right. Im only crawling at this point, so there was no sudden take off or braking involved. Next thing I know I'm launched off my bike from behind. I then find myself on the road with a car parked on my rear tyre. Some how the dickhead behind had missed the fact that I was still in the intersection and drove straight into me, despite him having been stationary behind me just seconds before. After some light verbal abuse sent the drivers way, he reversed his car off the bike and we went around the corner to inspect the damage. Tail chop bracket was bent all the way in, gear lever was bent, clutch bent and the bike felt a little wonky. Then my heart sunk as I discovered my low mount termi on the right side was snapped in half ( took me ages to find those and modify them) So anyway, I was not hurt, and the damage seemed pretty minor. The guy is insured with nrma and immediately lodged a claim. As I've never had any sort of accident, and nrma are not available to ask right now, I have a few questions to those of you unfortunate enough to have been in a similar position. 1. Are there any nrma approved repairers that anyone here can recommend? I'm in Sydney, parramatta area. 2. What would happen when it comes to replacing my termi's considering they are not made anymore? I imagine they would be replaced with something similar, but do I have any other options? I really don't want to have to settle for other pipes... 3. Would I be able to claim for any gear? My helmet hit the ground, but nothing was damaged at all. Any experiences claiming gear in this sort of situation? Would the insurance company want to see any 'damaged' gear? Any experiences or advice would be much appreciated. As I said this is my first incident, and I've got no idea of what I can claim or how I go about it. Thanks guys n gals Damo Title: Re: My first "incident".... Post by: Brett76 on July 06, 2012, 05:40:37 PM Would I be able to claim for any gear? Damo, Hate reading these & note you dodn't mention that you were hurt so i am glad. My brother in-law had a similar incident last year with a little more speed involved. He claimed new helmet, dianese jacket, gloves & boots + kevlar jeans. The helmet was a no brainer for the insurance company, for the gear he just sent in a picture & quote from MCAS or somewhere for replacement costs & got cut a cheque. Good luck Brett Title: Re: My first "incident".... Post by: dragonworld. on July 06, 2012, 06:21:22 PM Good to hear you're ok!! [thumbsup]
As pilots say "Any landing you can walk/stagger away from is a good one!" [thumbsup] [thumbsup] Some insurance company's will stall, baulk, and attempt to get out of paying, but be persistant, your property was damaged and that includes your gear and it has to be replaced!! Good Luck! ;D With your pipes maybe a quote from a motorcycle shop (Whoever does the inspection/damages quote) regarding the pipes and the labour to do what you had done to them?? The insurance will of course try to beat the costs down, but see how you go!? [bang] Title: Re: My first "incident".... Post by: J5 on July 06, 2012, 06:33:05 PM nrma has a 24/7 helpline so google says
you are claiming from the other parties insurance so claim for any damage of anything that was involved including helmet, gloves , gear , shoes , anything that was damaged you will have to consider a few things , if they cannot find those pipes anymore then you may have to accept something else or disuss a cheque from them , lets face if they arent made anymore and you can find them then what can you do ?? other than maybe accepting a total loss writeoff afaik you dont need to find an nrma approved repairer but it would make things smoother and quicker to have things fixed Title: Re: My first "incident".... Post by: duke8 on July 06, 2012, 07:33:04 PM Thanks guys for the well wishes and the advice.... I'll stick to my guns and see how I go with the insurance company. I'm also a customer with them, so if they don't do right by me, I'll take my business elsewhere and will make sure they know about it...

Title: Re: My first "incident".... Post by: loony888 on July 07, 2012, 02:12:06 AM glad you're ok mate,
as far as your termis go you can buy spares for them, if the australian importer won't help you pm me, i may be able to put you onto someone that can help. with difficult to get stuff the repairer can be hit or miss, depends on how enthusiastic they are, the more you can assist them with finding what they need the better the chances of getting what you want. as for your gear, if your helmet hit the ground it will be marked and NRMA will replace it, if all your other gear is ok then you won't get that replaced. good luck with your repairs, i'm in brissie so i can't help with local knowledge, sorry. paul. Title: Re: My first "incident".... Post by: duke8 on July 07, 2012, 03:02:40 AM Cheers guys :)
Paul I'll definetly be in touch if I get stuck with my termi's.... Title: Re: My first "incident".... Title: Re: My first "incident".... Post by: 748s on July 07, 2012, 04:10:52 PM 1. Report it at your local police station and get an event number (E********)
2. Get a quote for repairs from an authorised Ducati dealer. You don't have to get it repaired there, they will find/check all the damage, know what parts cost and give you a copy of quote for insurance claim. 3. Get replacement costs for any damaged gear. 4. Lodge claim with your insurer. 5. Wait until they get to it. Title: Re: My first "incident".... Post by: techno on July 09, 2012, 07:36:12 PM Glad to hear you are OK.
If you are also insured with NRMA as well, there should be no problems like trying to say it was partly your fault. You should be able to claim all of your damage but putting a value on your termi's might be difficult if they were a "one off". Title: Re: My first "incident".... Post by: kyle on July 09, 2012, 08:30:09 PM Glad to hear you're ok mate! I've not had to make a claim for my bike yet thankfully, though I have no doubt i'll have to in the future.
As others have said, claim anything that has any sort of damage on it.. Definitely claim a helmet and consider your pants/gloves/jacket if they got marked at all. All the best with finding a good repairer and also replacement termis! Title: Re: My first "incident".... Post by: monstermick58 on July 11, 2012, 09:57:56 PM Sorry to hear about your mishap and I hope you are OK.
Event number from the police, things wont happen without this (hopefully you have that as I'm coming in late on this one). Get the bike to a licenced repairer, Fraser's if you like, they can make a proper assessment on the bike, you can bet your bottom dollar you will have missed something only to find out about it later. Definitely claim your helmet, look really close at the rest of your gear and if its damaged even slightly include that as well. I had something similar happen to me 2 years ago and I sent photos of the damaged gear to my insurer (Insure My Ride) and they were great, they had my bike picked up and delivered back to me and gave me a couple of grand to replace my gear through MSAS at Liverpool. The reason you should go down this track is so everything is officially documented and if there is a query or (heaven forbid) dispute you have the documents to back up your claim. Good luck with it. Mmick Title: Re: My first "incident".... Post by: duke8 on July 12, 2012, 10:14:02 PM Thanks everyone for the support and advice....
I've had my bike taken to frasers for an assessment. It's been there since tuesday, I haven't heard anything back yet but they did say it'd take a few days. Ive also spoke to the insurance company and they have advised I will need to take photos of any damaged gear and send it in with quotes for replacements and they will pay for it, so I'll get a new helmet and jacket out of the ordeal. They will also reimburse me for any costs incurred as a result of the accident, provided I supply invoices/receipts etc. Now I've just got to sit back and wait....in the meantime, an upgrade bike may be on the way in the next week or so, and yes, pics will follow if that happens. Title: Re: My first "incident".... Post by: monstermick58 on July 13, 2012, 12:03:16 AM All I can say is GOOD.
Hope it all pans out for you. New bike you say?? Mmick Title: Re: My first "incident".... Post by: duke8 on July 13, 2012, 05:02:50 PM Yep mick new bike, but I don't wanna jinx it yet, so I'll wait untill it's in my garage before saying too much more . Let's just say it is a monster, and will have alot more factory bling than the 620 ;)
Title: Re: My first "incident".... Post by: duke8 on August 21, 2012, 03:25:25 AM G'day guys n gals
Just though I'd post an update of what ended up happening with my bike n gear. It may help someone else at some stage... Basically I took the bike to get a smash quote at frasers... Quote came to around 9k... I thought they were going to write off the bike, however when the assessor came, he found a few things that were just wear n tear, and manged to negotiate the price down to 5.5k. Turned out they had a Termi kit for the 620' which they quoted 2k for, a new tank was 2k, and the other items were my clutch lever, gear lever, mirrors and a new rear seat cowl. All the damage bar my termi's was superficial, and didn't really need to be replaced, so I took it home and decided to fix it myself... Insurance cut me a chq for 5.5k for the bike and they also gave me another $1500 for my gear, being a shoei tzx, visor and a new Danese jacket( jacket just got small scratch but the helmet is toast). I got some replacement termis from a dmf member (thanks dom) for $450, and thats all i had to spend on the bike. Got a new helmet snd jacket, and spent a sizeable portion of the leftovers on mods for the s4rs ;D All in all it ended up well for me, I just had to send photos of my damaged gear, and quotes for replacements... No questions asked and no disputes. I was really surprised how easy the whole thing was, as this was not my insurance company, it was the other guys. Thanks again to all who offered support and advice [thumbsup] :-X Title: Re: My first "incident".... Post by: cicii on August 21, 2012, 04:04:27 AM No probs Damo!
Title: Re: Re: My first "incident".... Post by: kyle on August 21, 2012, 04:55:18 AM Thanks Damo! For saving me $450 :)
That's a good news story mate! Who are you insured with? Thays awesome of them to send you the cheque and not have inw of their repairers do the work! Title: Re: My first "incident".... Post by: duke8 on August 21, 2012, 03:10:09 PM No worries kyle ;D.... The timing was just right, it was meant to be ;)
As for the insurer, it was nrma, but it was the other guys insurer, not mine. I didn't even inform my insurance co... I was stoked when they said they'll pay me rather than the dealer... Scored well form an unfortunate event [thumbsup] Title: Re: My first "incident".... Post by: monstermick58 on August 29, 2012, 04:33:08 AM Good to hear that things worked out.
So if I read this right, you now have about 5k to play with ?? MMMM.... project bike maybe?! Mmick Title: Re: My first "incident".... Post by: Betty on August 29, 2012, 11:18:39 AM MMMM.... project bike maybe?! His new 'project' bike is what you see in his avatar Mmick [evil] Title: Re: My first "incident".... Post by: duke8 on August 29, 2012, 03:35:33 PM Exactly right Betty.... Nothing empties a bank balance like a ducati and a freely used debit card ;D... It's been fun though. Pretty much done modding the rs now, just waiting on a few more packages to arrive
