Title: rare find?? *updated pics*
Post by: roggie on July 10, 2012, 08:05:25 PM
*updated pics page 3*

so i took the plunge this weekend and traded my 09 696 for an 07 S4Rs!

i dropped by my dealer a week ago to pick up oil and a filter. noticed the S4Rs on the floor and asked about it. Only 130 miles on the clock! i couldnt resist. soon after i got my 696 i realized i liked the style of the original monsters better. The 696 has been a great bike and i just figured down the road i would sell it and hope to come across a S2R800 or 1000. i never really considered an S4Rs until I saw this one.

So I dont know all of the ins and out of the bike yet and this is where i could use some help to establish a baseline of what i have here. I want to get the bike back to stock and then start from there.
-I had the handle bar riser switched back to stock along with the mirrors (diavel mirrors shown in the images, got to keep em). The handle bar is slightly higher than the stock (which i have). and its goldish in color. Anyone know what it might be?
-bar ends are aftermarket, unfortunately i dont have the stock (although i will probably switch to bar end mirrors at some point, so its not that critical). anyone know what those are?
-Exhaust is just slips-ons... which sound amazing compared to the stock 696 cans.
-Oil cooler has an after market guard. i think i'll keep that on.
-wind screen is tinted and i have the original clear one. was that a ducati accessory?
-just noticed the rear fender and chain guard are painted to match the silver stripe. that wasnt an option was it? i am guessing the previous owner just had them painted to match?
-had the horn amplifiers removed
-oh and the tank has expanded and is in the process of a claim
Is there anything else you guys and gals notice thats not stock or looks out of place?

I'm excited to start breaking this 07 in... but also going to go easy because its a whole different monster compared to the 696...

thanks for reading and id appreciate any imput...

Good point. I did ask the dealer about this and was told it should be fine because of the low miles and that the bike was stored inside. But I think I will pull the cover and take a look just in case. How hard is it to replace them?

Oh, and a side note all fluids were just changed too.

Tell the dealer Ducati recommends replacing belts regardless of mileage/storage conditions every 2 years.

4V belts aren't cheap. Have them do it.

Given their reasons for saying the belts will be fine ... maybe its better to have someone else do it?

point taken...

4V belt replacement can be tricky the first time.

I just wouldn't recommend it as a first endeavor in Ducati repair/maintenance.

just have them take off the cost of the belt replacement and take it to another dealer.

I can't believe they said that.

for that matter, the tires would be 5 years old as well.

- The windscreen 'glass' was an aftermarket buy. Stock is clear
- Rear fender/hugger and chain guard paint is custom work. The PO took them off and had a paint shop do it.

Out of place... um... big stonkin' reflectors.

So the dealer said *all* the fluids have been replaced? I'm guessing he didn't mean fork oil as well. If probably ok, but if you really want to be sure, new oil should go in.

Also, find someone who knows suspension to help you set a base line set up. You've got a nice suspension package on that bike. Don't waste it with crap settings.

those horns under the light aren't stock. the amplifier you removed are for those.

the silver painted fender and chainguard also are not stock nor options

the dark windscreen, may be a Ducati Peformance, but if he's into spraypainting, may be just painted on the inside

Ducatiz is working on aluminum tanks for these bikes I think  [thumbsup]

Thanks for all the replies and suggestions. I'll deal with the belts for sure, although I may be past negotiation at this point :(

Unfortunately I'll be out of town now for a few days and won't be able to check back here till the weekend (not sure if wifi is available)
Please keep the comments and suggestions coming.
Thanks!

I was told those were the amplifiers (under the light) they have been removed and the horn seems to work fine.

Yeah not sure how I feel about all the painted parts... Might need to switch them out or repaint black?

Carbon fiber

indeed... although my pocket book may need to wait a bit for that  ;D

do you know if those pieces were unpainted stock? (i know they were black, but was that just the plastic color?) im guessing even if i tried to strip the paint the parts were probably prepped for painting, leaving me with some rough looking parts  [bang]
still dont know why they would have been painted in the first place...

ok back in town...

yeah, i didnt see any DP part numbers on the smoked windscreen so its probably aftermarket. I do have the clear screen, yet it that thing was painted as well  ???

and good point on the fork oil, im guessing that wasnt touched.

i will for sure try to get the suspension set up to my 6-2 build and preference. hopefully sooner than later...

still wondering what the gold handle bar is and what make the bar ends are... any help would be appreciated

definitely unpainted. you can check in tutorials on how some people are dying them back to black.

Thanks Raux,
The closer I look at it, it almost seems like it may be cf underneath (just the fender). I swear I can see the rough weave on the bottom side.

has anyone else had a hard time removing the passenger foot peg brackets? i havent wrenched on them that hard yet, but with moderate pressure to the allen key they didnt want to budge... i am thinking i need to pick up an allen socket to use with my breaker bar instead of twisting my allen wrench.

any suggestions?? i dont want to strip the allen bolts...

passenger peg brackets werent as bad as i thought  [roll]
used the breaker bar and only one took a bit of pressure. No "red loctite" as others have stated.

rear mudguard is def carbon and painted... I'm going to try and strip the paint...

I remember seeing something on one of the Powerblock shows on SpikeTV a while back about soaking painted plastic parts in brake fluid and the paint will fall right off.  (i certainly can attest to that happening when i ACCIDENTALLY drip brake fluid on anything...)

Im not sure what effect it will have on carbon, but you could try it on an inconspicuous corner...might be a little less damaging than MEK or some other powerful paint stripper...

Actually I already did and his suggestion was to try gasoline. He thought if it was just spray paint it might work.

As soon as I have some free time (who would've thought kids would be so much work?) I will give this a try!

Thanks again for all of the help

here are some new photos...

i changed the windscreen back to stock since i like that look a bit better (for now at least).

changed the mirrors to stock and then switched them back to the Diavel mirrors. I have bar ends on order, but the current set up is growing on me a little.

took off the extra tail danglers and added a plate re-locator.

removed the frame stickers and reflectors

took off the rear fender (painted cf  [bang]) and rear chain guard. still havent had a chance to find out if the paint will come off ok. didnt remove the painted middle chain guard.

removed the rear passenger pegs.

removed brackets that were on the forks for extra lights.

removed the gold handle bar (still not sure what it is) and put the stock bar back on (and i like that position much better).

re-routed the left side wiring to the middle of the fork and i still need to do the same to the right, but i need to remove the head light to get at the connector to do that.

front brake lines are aftermarket to work with the tall riser and bar. i will have that switched back to stock soon because the line is now way to long with the  stock set up.

i cant believe how much was done to this bike with only 130 miles on the od!!! the PO must have had it done at purchase??

Now i have started to research the whole exhaust / ecu/ air box set up. Please ignore my ignorance, im still learning as we go here... what i seem to have is just the slipon Termis with an open air box mod. As far as i know, the bike runs fine. with that being said, was there probably an ECU change as well? so far i have read that there are two different ecu changes with the termi setup(s). either a slipon ecu or a full system ecu. I'll find out for sure when i take the bike back in for the tank issue, but if anyone can shed some more light on that issue i would appreciate it.

thanks again!

Yes, there were two DP ECUs as you say, one supplied with the slip-ons and the other with the full system.

I am not sure whether anybody has ever posted reliable information about how they differered. The key bit is that both did away with the O2 sensor, so that either would be fully tunable via a Power Commander (unlike the stock ECU).

Nice bike, looking much better to my eye in the second set of pics.

On the mirrors, the stock units are rubbish but the Diavel bits, while I imagine they offer good vision, do look a bit odd. Rizoma makes some great alternatives.

On the fork fluid, I'd consider riding the bike for a bit before you bother changing that. It is not as though it will have metal in it from wear. The fork seals OTOH might well be on the way out, and you'll be doing the fluid when you do those.

Great bikes! If you don't like the ride from the rear, check my sig line.

Dude that is one nice looking, clean ass bike....

I myself have just bought one just like it, and am waiting for it to be delivered (bought it interstate, and yes I will post some pics once it arrives ;)).

To further expand on your ECU question, from what I was able to find online, the full system ECU part number is 96517706B, and the slip on one is 96517906B (although some people claim its the other way around). If your ECU is one of these, then yes your ECU would have been changed from stock.

Enjoy that bike!! Can't wait to get mine  ;D

thanks Moronic, actually the Diavel mirrors arent much better as far as vision from the stock ears. I'm still seeing mostly arms [thumbsdown]
looking forward to the bar end mirrors...
And i have read a bit about your suspension changes... i'll give the current setup some miles before i start making adjustments...

thanks as well duke8, look forward to seeing pics once you take delivery! i wasnt really even planning on making this purchase (this soon), but when i saw it at the dealer i couldnt pass it up. low miles, classic monster and more power than i'll ever need!!  [evil]

thanks for the ECU info as well. i'm not sure if those numbers are stamped on the actual parts, but that would be a good way to tell, especially if the dealer cant give me absolute confirmation...

Pics are on my local board here ......http://www.ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=58852.0 (http://www.ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=58852.0)

Couldn't be happier. Mine has the full Termi setup and I can confirm the ecu is the 706b one. Best way for me to describe the sound, is angry, loud and just plain badass....

Hope you enjoy yours as much as I know im gonna enjoy mine.

Welcome back Jas!
And thanks very much.
Yeah this thing is badass. I can't believe how much more comfortable I am on this bike compared to the 696. I think I was just too cramped on that one being 6-2 & 190.

confirmed tonight that my ECU is correct for the Termi slipons and open air box setup. Not that its a big surprise, but at least its a little peace of mind. thanks again duke8 for the info...

also swapped out the diavel mirrors for the bar end set. i forgot how much better that makes the cockpit look.  [evil]

some days im on the fence about the windscreen, but i'll keep it on for now... As others have pointed out, i do think it goes with the flow of the bike if you have the beer tray and long cans...

had an unfortunate drip on the crank case near the clutch cover. i traced it back and it looks like it was coming from the tank breather hose, but it has put a nasty stain in the paint. i tried washing, then alcohol, then goo gone, then even a swirl remover compound, but this thing seems to be on for good  [bang]. i am wondering if its brake/clutch fluid, but that doesnt seem to be possible? at any rate i cleaned it up as much as I could and will keep an eye on it to make sure it wont reoccur ...

my new tank should be in at the dealer shortly. i am a bit confused about this despite all of the searching. is there actually a fix for the pre 09 monsters? or are we just getting old stock replacements? if so, that sucks balls... Im not looking forward to replacing that out of my own pocket a 2nd, 3rd or even more times around.

thanks again for the info everyone...

I'm on my 3rd tank - you won't get that many with the settlement - once you get this one on that will probably be the last one because of the age of your bike and the time frame of the settlement - same tank as before - no fix just a delay til you're screwed

damn... i was afraid that was the case... [thumbsdown]

so aside from coating or an AL tank is it best to drain the tank for storage months?

or... i just located a gas station about 14 miles away that sells pure gas, no ethanol. It looks like i'll pick up a few 5 gallon gas cans and just store them in the garage and make a trip every few weeks to pick up more...

somewhat of a solution. [roll]
