Title: only have half throttle
Post by: faolan01 on July 12, 2012, 08:59:27 AM
2006 S2R800 is only recognizing the first half of the throttle twist. The issue started at the end of last season and was mostly that it wouldn't go WOT once fully warmed up. At the start of this season, it was getting MUCH worse. I replaced the stock ECU with the DP ECU this season hoping to fix the issue (along with the surging/hunting/lean mix the stock ECU is known for), but the not recognizing WOT problem is still there. It recognizes the first half of the throttle twist, but if i crank it further it acts like it's confused and drops back to a maximum of 6000RPM and won't go any higher. At that point I have to roll all the way off the throttle and then roll back on to have it recognize that I am on the throttle. When the problem first started happening it was only after I had gotten the engine fully warmed up while riding then took a brief stop for coffee/food and got back on with the engine still hot, but it has quickly become an all the time issue.

Since the problem continued after replacing the ECU, and the new ECU fixed other issues, my guess is a bad sensor somewhere in the system. Set up an appointment to have Riverside look at it later this month, but I'm really curious about what the problem could be.

Going to guess Throttle Position Sensor...

x2

might as well replace the fuel filter as well just for the heck of it if it hasn't been done recently

that was my first thought, but shouldn't a problem with the TPS have shown up when they rest it at the time the new ECU was installed?

you would think so, but potentiometer type sensors like the tps often appear normal when cold and develop issues the hotter they get

well I dropped her off at Riverside on 7/24 and.....still no idea what's wrong. They've been testing everything they can think of and have even had calls in to Ducati to try and get it sorted out, but so far no dice. They can reproduce the problem easily, they just don't know what's causing it yet  :( I'll be sure to post the final diagnosis once I have it in case it happens to anyone else.

They are just bad mechanics, take your bike away from them and find a specialist.

problem solved. Fuel pump pressure sensor was bad and was dropping the fuel pressure to about 1.2BAR when the ECU was sending WOT data to the pump.

Fuel pump pressure sensor?

Was that what they wrote on the service sheet?

they called me at work this morning. haven't gone in to pick it up. that was pretty much what I got out of the conversation, but I'll probably update this with corrections when I actually pick the bike up

'Spose they said/meant pressure 'regulator'?

we have a winner! pressure regulator and fuel pump got replaced. took her out for a quick blast and she's running beautifully now  ;D
