Title: At 80 mph...
Post by: Anthony81586 on July 19, 2012, 04:56:03 AM
I'm new to riding and have an 03 monster 620. Today was my first time on the highway, as I commuted to work. I noticed that as I got to 80mph or higher (didn't go much higher), the front end was making a high pitched noise, not like a whistle but almost like a "whirrr". Is that just the smaller front tire on the pavement or maybe air passing the dual rotors?

I'm sure it's probably nothing but being a new rider has me questioning everything. Thanks!

yeah...good potential there...worth looking into at the very least...how many miles on the bike?

Just over 2,000 (yea really low miles for an 03). I'd be very surprised if it were bearings. But Wednesday I'm bringing in for maintenance since I just purchased it so I'll be sure to mention it. Thanks again.

Sounds are really hard to pinpoint, especially at speed with a helmet on. 9 years old grease in your bearings is a possibility, as are 9 year old belts/pullies (get those changed ASAP if you haven't already) or even normal intake noise.

Wind over rotors isn't out of the question. I couldn't say. With foam filtered FCR's and a RoadRacing exhaust, the SPL's on my bike at 80 are roughly equivalent to cockpit noise in a P51 Mustang. :D

Yea belts are getting changed Wednesday. While the bearings are certainly not out of the question but I feel like I'd hear it at lower speeds as well and not right around 80 consistently. I'm wondering if it's just wind noise that I'm not accustomed to?
