Title: monster 1100 vs streetfighter 1100.
Post by: polivo on July 24, 2012, 12:37:22 PM
Have any m1100 owners riden a streetfighter 848 or 1100?  what are your general thoughts? I dont mean simply speed. How did it turn it?  How does it track in turns? how are the brakes, accel, decel.. engine breaking, ergonmics, suspension, heat?  Inquiring minds want to know.. from the perspective of an m1100 point of view.

well i have a 796, which is basically the same thing, but i rode the 848 streetfighter, and i like it, but i prefer the 2valve powerband much better, lots of low end torque makes it fun, but the 848 is very smooth and scoots but you have to rev it up quite a bit to get any fun power, id imagine its the same thing on the 1098 streetfighter too

overall i like the looks of the streetfigher but the power output of the monster.. if that makes any sense, i mean sure the 848 will be faster overall, but for tooling around town, id like the low end of the monster

I tested the m1100 before buying my 1098 streetfighter s, so take this for what it's worth having only been on the 1100 for 10 minutes.  They are two totally different bikes.  The throttle response from the streetfighter is immediate and intense whereas the throttle response from the monster is much more gradual.  that's the biggest difference I noticed.  You're also tipped forward quite a bit more on  the streetfighter, which makes it not nearly as comfy.

My take-away from the test rides is this... they're two COMPLETELY different bikes.  If you ride both you'll instantly know which one you prefer.

polivo,

Heat was the main reason why I had to sell my air-cooled monster (2010 696 ABS) last year. That things got so hot in traffic during the summer (DC area) that I thought it would overheat at any moment. The M1100 comes with a tiny oil cooler but I highly doubt that it will make huge difference.

As far as brakes, accel, decel, engine breaking, ergonomics, suspension...etc, the SF (I rode the 848) rides more like a crotch rocket.

You'll be just fine unless you're sitting still for quite some time in the midst of the summer.  So basically stay off 95, and the beltway.

I can work around the Beltway but can't stay off the 95. It's my only way home.  ;D

I've ridden my Monster 1100 EVO in Palm Springs in July after riding 80 miles through the mountains.  Yes, heat pours off of it.  No, it never overheated.  For those who don't live in SoCal, Palm Springs in July typically gets up over 110 degrees... but it's a dry heat.  ;)

I've also spent some time on the SF 848, probably around 100 miles (2 different occasions-once on a demo day ride and once overnight while my bike was in for service).  It is every bit as good as the Monster.  It turns in easily, it is even more narrow than the Monster, it has a bigger gas tank, and it revs higher and is smoother... plus it makes more power.  It's a fantastic bike IMO.  I didn't find the riding position on the SF to be that much different than my bike-the seat is a tad thinner but I think the shape is a bit better.  For commuting, the SF 848 owns the Monster.  For canyon carving they're probably equal.

I haven't ridden the 1098 version.

I've owned a 2009 M1100 (~7800 miles) and now have a 2010 Streetfighter 1098 (~14500 miles). The power is night and day. The power and torque of the M1100 does not come close to how the SF feels. The seating is similar on both that your balls will be up against the tank unless you change the seat or riding fast. I loved my M1100 on twisties, but the SF just glides through turns effortlessly.

The biggest problem with the SF is the 3000-4000 rpm flat spot. I have the Double Dog 134DD exhaust (no longer avail) and it eliminated 99% of the flat spot. Many others have done remapping, aftermarket exhausts, etc and have eliminated enough of it to make it tolerable.

As others have said, give both bikes a ride and make your decision. Everyone can give you an opinion, but only yours will matter. Let the right bike speak to you.

Very interesting, I've been wanting to test ride the SF848 since it came out but Ducati isnt doing a factory demo day this year where I am and the local dealers only allow demos on certain models. Guess I'll wait until next summer.
