Title: what is the (diode?) mounted at the upper triple ('01 M750)?
Post by: carbmon on July 25, 2012, 09:05:21 AM
There's an electrical component (diode?) mounted on a bracket on my '01 M750 (carbs) at the upper triple clamp behind the headlight.  I've not found it on any schematic I have.

Can anyone tell me the function of that component?  Is it related to the rectifier/voltage regulation circuit or what?

I assume it is located there for cooling purposes.  My question relates to a project to clean-up the front end and fab a custom instrument/headlight setup.

TIA

I'm 99.99% sure I know what you are talking about.  Ducati Air Temperature Sensor is the part you are most likely thinking of.  Mine is just dangling in there behind the headlight with my new setup.  I've yet to add a bracket for it.

It's part number is 55240121A

Here is a pic of it (borrowed and yes this is the SBK image) it's #2:

actually it should look like the below. this is the diagram directly from Ducati for the 01 carbed M750. part #21. it's the air temp sensor, which is used to determine whether to turn on or off the heaters on the carbs. if it's too cold out, the heaters on the carbs turn on to warm up the fuel for better atomization

^ Yes, the images were blocked here at work from the factory parts fiche, they have the same "tip" as they are the same part just for the different bike so therefore plug/mount is changed.  The part on my '01 900 is the same as the one moto posted.

That's it, thank you.

Moot with unheated FCRs - another part of the harness I can delete.

every 01 M750 I have seen is carbed...including the one that belongs to my sister that is parked in my garage...

in 01' both carbed and FI were available at the same time all year, the FI ones of course being the more expensive ones. the carbed ones were probably just leftover 00's that they reissued as 01's. a lot of companies do that type of thing when making a major change, cars and bikes alike

Same here.

According to the spare parts catalog available from Ducati.com the '01 M750 is carburated.

I'm pretty sure this a model/year of manufacture thing

Silly to belabor the point but you are correct, it is a "model year" thing.

All 2001 Model Year M750 are carburetted.

No particular relation between "Model Year" and date of manufacture for most companies - they play fast and loose with that all the time, notoriously declaring a model year in advance of the calendar year (an '02 Model Year bike might be made and sold in calendar year '01).

The EPA emissions tag which must accurately state Date of Manufacture (DOM) is a poor guide of model year for that same reason.

Similarly, in many jurisdictions the authority that issues titles is sloppy and often, when processing the initial title on a new vehicle, simply declares the model date as the year of the first title issue, so titles are often a poor indicator of "Manufacturer Model Year" (H-2 CHARLIE may have a Model Year '02 that was first sold new in '01 and is now saddled with a title declaring it an '01 for that reason) .

Ultimately, relating the VIN to manufacturer data is the best way to know what "Model Year" vehicle you own, usually only important when buying parts or looking for detailed component specs (I'd wager that H-2 CHARLIE's VIN 10th character is "2" indicating a 2002 Model Year, not "1" for '01).

yeah, more than you wanted to know

the injected 750 are the later st based frame, like all other 2002 models.  i guess the 1000 and 800 weren't ready for 2002, so they stuck with the 750 and 900 as unique single year model run bikes as such.

our bikes have "compliance plates" with a build month and year, and anything built 09 (or even 08, 2000 esp) and later are the next year model.  so built in 2001 does not mean 2001 model.

i can say it runs really good and if it did not and was carbed with issues it would have ben gone  a long time ago , even with easy carb fixes it seems there are alot of that around here .

No issues with FCRs other than brilliant snappy response all the way across the throttle  [thumbsup]
