Title: Need Help!!!!! trouble with handlebar install
Post by: drkhorse on July 28, 2012, 11:27:32 AM
I'm trying to install an aftermarket handlebar and risers kit on my 09 Monster 696. I had no trouble removing all the controls, grips and levers. However once I reached handlbar I cant remove the stock risers (picture attached). I've tried using my racket wrench with a hex head but the bolts just wont budge no matter how hard I pull. Do I need some sort of power tool to get this off? If so what kind? I don't want to keep forcing it and risk stripping the bolts.

There is a nut on the underside of the top triple.

You'll need to use a wrench.

The nut on the underside wasn't budging either, I hit it with some WD-40 let it sit for a while and that finally did the trick. Thanks!

It is your handlebar mount after all. ;D

It needs to be tight. I think I'd use a torque wrench to put it back together.

That's pretty tight... ;)

If you use a decent quality allen key (guess the US calls them the same as we do) that fits well you can then 'extend' it with a long tube and increase the torque you can put through to the bolt. Alternatively you can do the same with a breaker bar / allen key socket combo.

That's 5 Nm more than the axle on my KTM FWIW. You'll probably want to (as said) put a torque wrench to it.
