buy bike in immaculate condition, very well maintained, 20k miles. get it registered. know it badly needs an oil change but dont want to wait several days on ordering a filter, I wanna ride!
go to napa, they have a listing, it appears correct and IS CHROME! do oil change, oil comes out black as hell but perfctly clean. filter fits perfectly as expected.
100 miles later notice a quiet knocking sound. not sure it I just didnt notice it before.
100 miles later, hearing knocking sound again, seems slightly louder, still not sure.
100 miles later hear knocking sound and notice it has definitely gotten louder, sounds very much like rod knock.
drain oil, its still the color of brand new oil, but FILLED with metalflake and a few larger flakes of rod bearing material. basically looks like heavy flake car paint.
300 miles after buying such a great bike, the engine is assumed nearly destroyed.
tear entire bike down to every last peice, rebuild EVERYTHING from the ground up, cleaning and lubing and painting as I go.
turns out there was some form of crap in the clean side (center) of the oil filter, most likely metal shavings of some sort from the manufacturing process (it was still sealed in celophane when purchased, and I'm always extremely careful not to allow anything to fall into the filter). both of the sets of rod bearings had 1/16th inch grooves in them directly in the center where the oil ports are located, and several large flakes had fallen off working outwards from the grooves. one of the bearing shells still had a small chunk of steel still embedded in it, caught between the two halves, and had heated up a little to where it started making a heat mark on the crank journal but hadn't quite actually caused any damage to the crank journal. a good polishing of the journal and the crank was back to good again.
K&N oil filters only from now on
:o maybe I'll wait a little to do my oil change ... :o
I have OEM filter from Monsterparts ....sould be ok [thumbsup]
Where are you from? I've never seen a woman driving a ducati before. I'm in central CT

Because I'm builing (slowly) my entire bike from boxes of parts I'm hoping to build out these annoying issues, as well as building in FCR's and a 944 kit ;)
My bike's alot younger than yours iirc (mine 05 620 @ 36K+ miles), the only things replaced due to failure / wear
(excluding tires)
Chain - original done at 10K, poor / no maintenance (I've gone 26K on the DID replacement)
rear tail light - from PO - the POS fast and furious integrated joke-of-a-led tailight - replaced witn proper bulb and led directionals
rear brake pads, because I promised the annual state inspection guy I would
Valve shims
Overall I'd say mine has been absolutely rock solid. I probably would have had to replace fork seals by now,
but I ditched the stock forks.
Oh - once I had to get a ride home from work because some dumbass lost his key [roll]
got my 750 a year ago stock (except for the D&D exhaust) with 3000 miles on it. Here is my list (and hopefully will not grow longer after this):
ebay front signals
motodynamic intergrated tailight with sequential turn signals
rizoma grip (sold and when back to stock)
ebay barend mirror
morimoto projector retrofited into the stock headlight before I crash the bike and took that off
pre-2001 windscreen fairing CF (took that off after the crash)
current dual headlight set up
796 bikini fairing
factory pro jet kit install with K&N Pods
new front tire
danmoto 180 gauge
ebay shorty levers
rearsets
and customed seat.
that's it I think I won't put any more MOD money into this bike. Just maintain it for day to day ride. I'm looking for an 748 or 9X6/8 bike for a change.
