Title: no clutch engagement
Post by: pitbull on August 02, 2012, 06:19:38 PM
came home from a 3 day ride about 7 or 8 days ago, put the bike away and haven't ridden since due to some house renovation work.

I finally decided tonight to take if out for an hour or so, to blow the dust off her and charge up the battery.  When I went to push the bike out of the garage, it wouldn't release when I squeezed the clutch lever. The clutch fluid is fine and there are no leaks and it appears as if the clutch slave cylinder is operating, but the bike won't roll.

It was getting dark and I couldn't get a closer inspection, but will tear into things tomorrow. In the meantime, I thought I would post hear to see if anyone had any ideas.

much thanks to anyone who has a thought.

What year and model?

Do you mean the clutch will not engage or will not disengage?

2001 900

rereading my post I realized I wasn't very clear....sorry. The clutch won't disengage is definitely a better way to put it.

One more question.

Do you feel resistance in the lever?  No resistance could be a hydraulic problem.  If you feel resistance it could be sticking plates.  Even better, remove the cover and see if the pressure plate moves.

no resistance any more than normal, that I can feel.

Now that it's morning, I will pull the clutch cover off and have a look.

My first guess might be a stuck/rusty plate like howie

that might make sense, seeing as I have an open clutch cover. I washed the bike not long after getting home and then put it away for the week without riding it again. Usually I ride the bike within a day of washing it.

You might be able to free it by putting it in gear, pulling the lever, and rocking it back and forth.

Yeah - you've got stuck plates - I'd put money to it.

Do what Nate says. Might take some agressive rocking with the lever pulled to get things free.

well........stuck plates is exactly what it was.

It took some very aggressive rocking while squeezing the clutch lever, but it eventually popped free and all is good.

thanks again Howie, SP and DP for taking the time to pass on your suggestions. It very likely would have taken me quite a while to figure out the issue on my own.

Go ride it and clean the rust out. ;)
