Title: New paint (rattle can)
Post by: rsoffar on August 04, 2012, 04:40:09 PM
Well here is the new paint job after getting the tank dent. Sorry for the phone pic.
Tank started out red with a nasty little dent on the right side, after a good bit of fixing and painting we're back to a perfect looking tank with a nice black paint job.
I used U-Pol paints and pretty much just went off this link (http://bayarearidersforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=264901) and think it turned out really good for our first time painting a tank.

Ill try to get some better pictures when I put the bike back together.

photo was taken right after the last coat of clear went on.

Looking good!  [thumbsup]

How did you fix the dents?  and that "ducati" is sticker or painted on?

The dent got fixed with filler, it wasnt as bad as some dents I have seen but it was kinda tough for me because the dent was right on the ridge under the "D" right at the apex of the curve. So sanding it to match the other side was "fun" [bang] ha. Ill put up some post bondo pre paint pics. I really cant believe I didnt get a photo of the dent, actually I didnt get any photos of the bike damaged.

The logos are a pearl white reflective vinyl I had my friend cut on his plotter. I ride bicycles a lot here in nyc and thats gotten me to be a big fan of doing things to help cars see you so something reflective seemed cool to me to try out (kinda the opposite of painting your bike black I guess)

Here is a mock up pic, yesterday I got the frame mounted (I hate the wiring harness on these things) and the front end back on so Im hoping I can finish it up over the next couple of nights after work. Having to do things in your 4th floor apt and a brooklyn sidewalk make things take a little longer haha. Frame got a fresh coat of paint same color as stock.

You can see from the pics we had the bright idea of waiting till my buddies roommate went out of town to convert part of his room into a spray booth haha, with respirators and some venting out the windows it never got bad at all in there. Also, did some work to the frame by cutting off the ignition coil mounts and the mounts for the little plastic side pieces along with a tail chop I think it really cleaned up the frame a lot.

I gotta be honest here, I took care of prep and sanding work on this paint project while my buddy took on the actual spraying. Spray cans have never been a strong medium of mine prob due to lack of practice. My friend on the other hand has tons of spray painting experience (you can see some of his most recent mural work if you ever go to 67 Burger in Brooklyn) He is super good with cans, amazing with drawing fonts, and just a good designer in all aspects, we are planning on working on a bunch of projects together hopefully trying to push our skills further with each one, his suzuki gs550 is next on the list.

Here is my buddies blog, its worth checking out if youre into Industrial design, or hand drawn fonts. A little promotion is the least I can do for someone who helped me paint my bike haha
