I dont see why there is any confusion here... the reasons stated (emissions/carbon credits) were known beforehand and was easily one of the major reasons that Audi picked up Duc.

Same difference. VW owns Audi, Bentley, Bugatti, Lamborghini, Porsche, SEAT, and Škoda. Ducati is just another subsidiary in the org chart.
