would it be possible to mod a set of 05 999 marchesini rims to an 01 900 monster? and if so, can anyone tell me what would be involved?
I'm assuming a different axle size and some spacers would be needed if it would work at all.
thanks very much in advance.
I though about it when those wheels first came around on ebay. My tech convinced me it was not a great idea.
Rotors are different bolt pattern as is the offset.
The 749/999 also use radial mount calipers in front...not sure if conventional calipers will adapt without spacing.
It would be easier if you did a fork upgrade at the same time
The rear is easier
I think it can be done, but it isn't exactly a bolt on
I should have mentioned, I did a sbk fork upgrade last year, if that makes a difference.
I ask because a set has come up super cheap locally ($400) which just seems too cheap not to give it a whirl if it's possible.

What model did the forks come from?
Probably a 748/916/996. Those also would require spacing calipers I think, and you still need 5 bolt rotors.
If you could get good used rotors it wouldn't be too bad. Otherwise what do 5 bolt rotors sell for?
A $400 mod could cost $1500 before you're done.
yeah........748 forks.
I see your point and I definitely have a history of turning cheap DIY projects into expensive projects.
maybe I'll contact the seller and see if he has the rotors as well.
or maybe I'll just not be impulsive for once and wait a little longer for a set of wheels to come along that are an easier fitment.

Not trying to talk you out of it...
I just don't think the bang is in the buck.
There's always BST's [laugh]
too late.................you've made too much common sense for me.
BST's might be just a tad above my price range.

You and me both. ;)
crap.......... I sent the gentleman a message and he has rotors to go with the rims. I asked him to get back to me with a price for rims and rotors.
I have a feeling I'm about to get into a project that's going to spiral way over my intended budget, not to mention skill-set.
You come up with the money.
We'll figure where to spend it. [laugh]
If it goes wrong...
I warned you.
If it goes right...
I was wrong.
I'm OK with being wrong. :P
a couple of things.
rumor is the 796 is using 5bolt 10mm offset rotors. WHICH would work for an older moster with 999 rims, if the original is also using 10mm offset.
the 999 rear is using a 5bolt sprocket and rotor, which for a newer monster with the rear speedo sensor is an issue, but on the older ones with front speedo cable, no issue.
Get the rear rotor too, they're different diameter, IIRC 5mm smaller.
I've got a caliper bracket you can have for very low $.
Rear axle is 30mm.
He gave me a very good price on the rims and rotors. I thanked him very much, but decided to pass.
I've waited 10 years to upgrade the wheels on my monster and I can wait a little longer to find wheels that will be a more direct fit.
It's killing me not to do it and I know I could find a way to make them work................... I dunno.......I'm getting cautious in my old age I guess.

It's not really much of an upgrade, if that makes you feel any better, the weight is almost identical IIRC

yeah............. it does make me feel a little better, although they do look sharp.
