I'm looking at options for replacement mirrors for my M1100 Evo that work best for actually seeing behind (and to the side). Not willing to do bar ends.
There's a bunch of Rizomas I know but not sure which are most functional.
Suggestions and comments on what you've used would be appreciated.
Large surface area + convex = good. Preferably the surface area should be large at the ends.
Position as far out as logical for you. If necessary by mirror wideners, but not if you are a medium/small rider.
If you (by using wideners?) are able to see straight behind you, there will be less dead angle view - can't have both.
Height is also a consideration - easier to see without taking your eyes away from traffic if they sit high.
I've been very happy with my Rizoma Impulsive [thumbsup]
The Ducati Viper mirrors look good too...
Limiting to non-bar ends, the Rizoma series seems good although I think they are pricey. I really like the Dynamic but price is a factor:
There are however knock-offs on eBay that are cheaper, although I do not have any inkling about the quality difference.
I don't know if it's the best or not, but I like my Rizoma Dynamic mirrors. It's narrower (and the position is lower) than the stock mirrors, so it won't tick cars' mirrors when lane-splitting, and I can see better with the rizoma. Just take your time to set it right (adjust the stem angle, height, backward or forward and the mirror itself) when installing it.
Just bought a pair of these off eBay for my Monster and they don't look bad at all. Very impressed with the quality.

Best mirrors I ever used for actually seeing what's behind you were Rizoma Class Retros..... but they are barends (large ones) but barends nonetheless.
I've had the rizoma dynamics, and whilst they look great, I couldn't see much, other than my arm... That said though I have very low clip ons which probably effect the visibility somewhat.
I sold those and got the class retros, they were far better, great visibility and they look bad ass.
I just put crg's on my new bike, and I like them the better than the rizomas. Better visibility behind me and awesome adjustability.... Again, bars ends though.
If you are going for mirrors to actually see what's behind you it's pretty rough to rule out bar ends. The best mirrors for that are probably the CRG hindsights. With them on you can easily see behind and to the side of yourself with both mirrors.
Any particular reason you wont do barends? Most standard non barend mirrors tend to not work as well as barends simply due to the physics/placement involved.
Bar ends on clipons especially zero rise... are a lot of work. you have to make a full head movement to use them.
That being said.
If you can find mirrors that are fully adjustable on height and was as fore/aft, and with a longer shaft, you can push them all the way out almost as far as bar ends and higher in your forward vision.
This is what I have now.

Ah, I can see that being pretty annoying on clip ons. Thought it was for a stock m1100evo.

It's even worse when you wear bi-focals! ;D
If you are looking at Euro mfrs (like Rizoma)...look for mirrors that are listed as 'e-marked'.
this is a EU standard like DOT that the parts are approved for road use
the 'e-marked' mirrors will be larger and more functional than the non-e ones

Anyone tried the knock-offs from this dealer? They have models from Rizoma lookalikes

I think those are more of a 696 knock off.
I have a set of diavel mirrors (came with my bike) and they were really no better than stock.
Also keep in mind that knock off supplier is shipping from hong kong so expect a little more of a wait if you use standard shipping. And it may create more of a hassle if you need to return or exchange.
That being said I did just order a pair of CRG bar end knock offs from them and they do the job ok. The set I ordered doesn't tighten into the end of my bar that well but for now I will live with it.
Good luck !

My perception has been that they increase the bike width. Perhaps I'm wrong?

If you're worried about the width for lane splitting then you should look into the CRG folding ones... they are designed to fold in so there is no diff in width.
But they do slightly increase the width of the bike but not to the point where the costs outweigh the benefits imo... but as ung has shown, there are a lot of different models and choices out there. I have the rizoma reverse retros and I love them but I've used the CRG's before and they do provide a much better view behind and to the sides with their 3" convex glass if your main point is rearward visibility.

+1 on the Rizoma Class Retros. Zero vibration, zero movement, and on the Monster it kind of gives it a kind of "bull bar" look.
I use the Rizoma Reverse Retros. They are the best mirrors I have used in my 30+ years of motorcycling.
Hi.
The Monster 696 being my first motorcycle I thought the stock mirrors were not up to what I expect to see behind me.
I first replaced them with these:
These have been linked to earlier in this post. They were pretty good. Not 'E' marked, more or less $100. But I cant say if they were better than stock.
Then, thinking I should be seeing better (I could see a bit too much of my arms).
I got these:
These have also been linked in this post. Also not 'E' marked. About $60. Look pretty good. And visibility is OK. The only complaint I have here is that I think I have too much of a blind spot with these ones.
Soooo. I went and got these ones (the one on the left, sorry, no complete photo):
They have also been mentioned in this post. I have not given them a spin yet. They cost $30.
The only thing I must add is that they all are modelled after some of the Rizoma models and measures seem very similar (if not exact). I do not know if the glass surface is the same (I should think not). These are all cheapish Chinese spin-offs.
Is it really worth the $250 tag price for the similar Rizomas?
Are there any better solutions ?
Hope to have helped. And hope you all have a great ride.
Mark.
The only functional mirrors I know of are found on bus and trucks.
I'm looking for mirrors also. The bar ends will get destroyed after a simple driveway tip over (I know, I use to have CRG's). Right now I'm using stock mirrors, nice but I see too much shoulder. I'm thinking the Ducati Vipers might be an option but I don't know if there any wider than stock, any of you know? If your using Vipers let me know how you like them.
Another consideration is ill probably get a Kaoko throttle lock later so bar end mirrors are out.

I have class retros on my 696 and love them.
Rizmoa Class Retro's look like they would survive a tip over also. So I have it narrowed down between them and the Vipers.
I have Class Retro on my 1100s and love them.
CRG Bar End Lane Splitters are still my favorites

When I bought my Monster last year, it had only one mirror and even that was badly placed.
I replaced it with similar ebay knock-offs as you have in that picture.
1st set: one mirror broken as new, wind would tip it over after ~80km/h. Seller sent another pair with only postage and I didn't need to return the old ones.
2nd set: realised there is optically two kinds of mirrors, wide (good) and narrow (got three of these). At the first test run, I found out that the mirrors would still tip over after 100km/h and the whole mirror starts to bend in the wind after 130km/h speeds. I could not tighten it enough. Also I didn't like how they blocked my hands from moving sideways. So I decided to replace them this winter.
Winter came, I looked at the CRG Lanesplitters and the price tag... Decided to try one more ebay knock offs first: http://www.ebay.com/itm/270816208628 (http://www.ebay.com/itm/270816208628) For a pair of CRG's I could buy 5-8 sets of those.
So I ordered a pair, they arrived pretty quickly and I actually installed them today. Since it was raining and only +1,5C I didn't ride today and I actually forgot to take pictures (too excited as the bike actually started after 5 months). If these don't fall off or apart and I can see wha'ts behind me, they were worth the price.
^^^^ by the time you spent all that money and time you could have bought Rizomas...... ;D
My CRG arrows will be here on Monday. I can't wait!! I will post pics here after i put them on.

If that were the case, I would have gotten them (or CRG's) in the first place.
Unfortunately the truth is those chinese knockoffs are so cheap in comparison that these three pairs together so far have cost me less than half of what one Rizoma or CRG would. There are other factors than just list price: postage, customs fees and VAT. The chinamen send these with free postage and they are so cheap that no VAT or customs fees are collected.
That's why I'm trying them first to see if I like the style (the rizoma reverse retro copy and I did not like them). If these CRG copys are good, I might put in the good ~300 euros for the real ones. Otherwise I'll just go and buy me bike a pair of black mickey mouse ears next... :D
I have the Rizoma Class mirrors on my 796 (the standard, non-bar-end version). They look great, but the view isn't any better than the stock mirrors. I was hoping to improve he view as well as the look.
Is there an indigenously designed mirror from China....one actually fabricated by them from scratch or are they all counterfeits?
Got them put on today.

Thanks, rode with them on today and they are SOLID. Absolutely no movement or vibration what so ever. WOOT! ;D
Maybe the reason why they cost more is the solidity and lack of vibration???

I had a lady in a camry try to squish me the other day on 10 leaving Santa Monica. 20 mph between two cars and I give a couple horn blips requesting more space between the car mirrors.
Her windows were open so I know she heard me, but then she started moving in on me. My shoulder was leaning on the other car until it gave me more space.
I am pretty sure that classifies as attempted man slaughter. I was too nice. Next time she is losing a mirror. I think that can be classified as self defense right?
I try to keep cool and take honest mistakes for honest mistakes but I have zero doubt that this was intentional.
I prefer not to split lanes, but my baby girl gets grumpy if I hold her under 20 for too long.
