99 750... Under the seat, just to the side of the suspension mount is a black plastic container. What is it? Part of the emissions system? Do I need it?
Probably the oil vapor collector box. If I'm right, it's got two larger diameter tubes running to it. One to the crank case breather the other to the airbox, below the filter.
it can be removed - though it's a point of discussion, and replaced with a filter on the breather or attached to the breather via some bit of hose.
Right so this is one of the parts that the TPO kit removes.

also commonly refferred to as a cannister-ectomy
negatory zooom - the oil vapor catch, not the charcoal canister.
On a 99 the oil vapor catch is mounted left left of the suspension rocker
yes, TPO has a kit to replace that.
That's the Illudium Pu 36 Explosive Space Modulator. For the love of Pete, don't touch it!!!!
I put the TPO filter on the breather/oil catch box. It's ugly, but useful, unlike the charcoal cannister. Then I removed the hose from the airbox and blanked it off with one of the plugs from the TPO kit.
Using the search feature will reveal much discussion about breather systems and if one should eliminate them and run a filter straight off the crankcase breather.
