So I'm back in NYC, and went down to see my bike.
Can't do a leak down test right now, but i found enough evidence to not warrant one.
I'm pretty sure the valve stem sits true with the rocker arm. The opening clearance is well well over the spec, its hovering just under 1mm of opening.
What do you guys think? The only guys i trust to do the work is about $600 to do both valves (parts and labor) if i send the head off to them. And i think theres about $300 in gaskets involved too. so that puts me around $1000 for full repair. What do you guys think? i can always just hire a local shop to press the guides in and do the rest myself, but id only be saving around $300 at most which quite frankly isnt worth it to me when i can just get the heads bolt them on and go.

The fact the valve sits true to the rocker won't tell you anything.
The fact the opener is loose, and I'll bet the closer is tight, suggests a bent valve.
Send them off...

WTF?!?!?!?!
a full head/cylinder gasket set (which includes cam seals and valve cover gaskets), genuine ducati, is only $30, not 300
I checked the 1000DS motor theres about 4 gaskets and they are priced at 50.99 each unless i typed it in wrong.
Buy a full head set for the bike. It's much less expensive than buying individual gaskets and you'll have lots of spares if you only remove one head! If you can't get a decent rate give me a holler and I work up a price for you.
Just got off the phone with ECS, for a full head service, (guides, seats, valves, shims) they are looking at $1000. :(
But i may be able to get a stock motor for about $1500 bucks which would be a drop in for me.
Cloner, I can't find a set of heads for the 1000DS, its not as popular of a motor as the 900 was.
Is that gasket underneath the head reuseable?
$1000 for an engine repaired by Steve and crew compared to something unknown for $1500?
The bike would be off to ECS.

+1
And, no, the head gasket is not reusable.
Base gasket is.
Thanks Speeddog, unfortunately the head gasket is the pricer one, the base gasket is less than $5.00
Well ECS said that they can get an engine and go over it before selling it to me. I dont think and wouldnt expect a warranty.
$1000 only covers the head work (its about $700 for the shop and the rest will be other misc stuff). the motor does have 34,000 miles on it and they said they have a working one with 5,000 miles on it somewhere (they recently moved), they just need to find it.
for full rebuild of the motor, it would cost around $1600 labor, not including parts and that could easily turn into a $2500 build. im not intrested in rebuilding the motor without rebuilding the bike, and i can only afford one and not both.
right now, i got the rear head about to come off, but it turns out the exhaust studs are hitting the suspension arm, so i looks like i need to drop the rear shock just to pull the head off. am i right on this? or is there a way around it?
i took the belts off and the cams are extremely hard to turn over. I suspect this is due to the closing rocker arm being jammed by the collets. I hope my collets arent done too.

Your cams are hard to turn because the valves are bent, you're using the closer lobe and rocker to pull the valve heads flat.
Speeddog, any recommendations on getting the valves off? I cant even get the belt on it to turn it enough to depress the closing rocker arm. I was hoping i can pull the cam out entirely. If i get to that point i might as well just look for a local shop to press in guides and fit the valves.
i got the front two valves out, both are bent.
the rear im still working on.

Pull the shafts on the opener rockers.
That may allow you to turn the cam enough to get one set of half rings out of the closer shim.
Got the valves out, all 4 are officially bent.
Sending them off to ECS. Sometime in the future i may get the lower end rebuilt, but i dont think its an issue for now.
Will let you guys know how it goes after i get the heads back. Is there anything special that i need to do once i get the heads back? Can i just bolt it on slap on belts and go?
