Title: Color Combo
Post by: He Man on August 17, 2012, 10:59:21 AM
So i went from rebuilding heads, to swapping just the motor to a complete makeover.

I was thinking of stripping the paint on the frame and then clear coating it for the raw steel look. but i wanted that for the tank too ( ive got a steel tank) and im not sure how that combo would work out.

Then theres just playing it safe with gloss black.

What say you?

A Yellow frame with clear coated tank could make for an interesting look.

Paul Smart ocean-green(?) frame maybe... , but then you need to do something smart about the wheels too

Or gloss dark grey powder coat

I'm just the other way around, and would prefer the raw look on the frame.  I always loved the raw aluminum truss work when I used to be on the rigging crew back in my sound production days.  Also always prefered the look of raw aluminum frame for either a mountain or road bike.  I'd do the raw trellis if it was my bike, and maybe do the tank in a Matrix like green, or a really dark blue.

gloss black and raw steel, or some sort of smoke over the steel tank to darken it up a little but keep the metal look if that's possible (ducpainter?) ...i'd like to see the tank protected obviously, but without a glossy finish.  glossy black lettering on the tank and maybe a big old fat black stripe down the middle ala the new monsters or even the standard s2r stripes down the side.

you'll need to come up with a metal rear cowl as well to keep the look going.

wrap/anodize the fork black.  no fender.  boom tubes if you can find em.

this thing is going to look sinister.  when you're done with it i'll buy it from you i think, because i've got to have the bike i just built in my head...

You do realize that someone is just going to knock it over and then pour liquid chicken fat on it when he's done, right?

that's a deal breaker.  please dont let that happen to my bike.   [bacon] on the other hand...

I say that you should do the frame in grilled cheese yellow so that when the dirt and grease pile on, the theme will have a better flavor!

I think you should paint the tank... one raw Monster in NYC is enough.   ;D

alpine white on white w/ whatever color you want for your ducati lettering.

if i was to redo my bike i would do burnt maroon on chicago orange but that's only because i'm a hokie  ;D

Raw frame, raw tank. Cuz if you don't like the tank you can easily repaint it.

I like the idea of yellow frame with the raw tank.

I take back my suggestion and I +1 on the raw tank and yellow frame. Would look sweet too if you put 1/4" black adhesive pinstriping on the tank before clear coating. Perhaps following the natural contours of the various shapes on the tank...

If your a perfectionist, I would really recommend powder coating the frame. While the raw look sounds appealing, I just don't think raw or painting would be an option. Remember any imperfection will show 100x on a raw frame. As far as colors go, well that's a subject you really should only ask yourself. This is your bike and you have to live with it. I would look at magazines with custom bikes, favorite colors, patriotic or colors that have personal meaning. I've always thought that a red white and blue bike is something I would want, but solid one color is also cool. You also have to think about the purchased items and how those colors would work. If what I type doesn't make sense, well that's because I'm getting tanked on lienenkugels "Big Eddy". If you like beer with big time body, give some a try.

Raw Tank + Ducati Titanium color for frame (e.g. SF 1090 Titanium) Engine "bit's and pieces" flat black

Rusty looking-bacon colored frame with aged, acid stained brushed aluminum tank, fender and cowl. Like you salvaged an old frame and pieced the rest together from the junk yard.

Nothing too flashy since its your bike and a magnet for shit to happen to it.  [cheeky]

ya mean like this??? Thats an 1100 EVO motor right there. [evil] suppose to have 100 crank HP. After the dyno tune and PCIII, well find out if i can get 90 at the wheel ( the 95 HP DS1000 put out 81 at the wheel bone stock)

 [evil] evil grin lvl 100

Of course it varies with dynos. I might pick up a midpipe for my bike. Im pretty sure the PCV will link up to the TBs on  the S2R1000 so i can run 2 maps.

Exactly like that.  More rust though.

yea im not sure how comfortable i am with leaving the rust on the frame. rust breeds rust. and it wont be a good base for the clear coat.

it does look freaking badass though.

i was goign to scotch brite it before i clear it. i want the lightest sanding material i can get because i dont want marks on the frame.

So the S2R swingarm fits on the EVO case?  Sehr interesante...

Take a look at this tank style.

yea im not going to drop that kind of pony on a (still a) everyday bike :P. I might snap pics and get full insurance, but thats about it! that bronzing looks badass but im pretty sure its bling blang$$

does anyone know how much i can sell my motor for? someone offered $500 for the whole thing.

Did you see a price for the bronze plating?  I haven't seen anything, but you are probably correct. It does look expensive. How much to paint or powdercoat a frame?  I guess I would be willing to pay if it wasn't more than say 50% more than powdercoating a frame.

don't see a lot of WHITE frames running around... love me a gloss black bike with a white frame. simple, understated and elegant.
