Title: S4R service!!!!?
Post by: 118811 on August 17, 2012, 04:14:26 PM
My buddy has a 04 S4R with 13k mi (?)
He just got his bike after a full service...to the tune of $1500!!?
Is that about the correct cost for valve adj., new belts & new fluids?

He said bike feels no different than before service.  I told him he at least has knows belts & valves are good to go. [thumbsup]

12k service is a lot more stuff than you listed.

So did he get a 12k service or just valves, belts, and fluids?

Those are things he told me.....what else is included in
a 12k service?

*****update*****

Just spoke again with my friend, there's a lot more that was done on his bike

New clutch pack
2 new exhaust valves
Front brake pads

Now $1500 doesn't sound that bad 8)

Had my 1,000km service done on my 1198 a couple months ago. Was surprised at the $157 bill. (lower than I was accustomed to). I asked why it was lower and how much the 7500 service would cost. The service manager said about $250 for the 7500 service and about 350 for the 15000 service. He said that when they realized they were getting a lot of really crappy bikes in on trade that they made a decision to basically slash the majority of the labor charges out of the services to encourage people to bring the bikes to them for service. This way they get better bikes on trade and can sell a better quality product.

WOW!!!
Is that just labor cost?

Yeah, borders on the unbelievable.

Considering that he got ~$900 worth of parts, then installation, valve adjust and fluids, all for $1500.

I paid $1800 for the 7500 mile service on my streetfighter.  That included new belts and a new front tire, but still ridiculous.

Thats like... a ridiculous pricing.  I just did my 7500 service myself and the sheer amount of stuff you need to take off the bike makes me think they cant be serious about that pricing... like $350 for 8+ hours of work?

That's really confusing.  ???  I paid $700 for my 6K service in Chicago Area. I thought the next big one was $12K. Now then again this is for a Monster 620 so there's probably a big difference here in components especially if you've got the dry clutch package.

M620 has services every 6,000 miles...Streetfighter every 7,500 miles.

620 is a much simpler motor overall so theoretically cheaper. Dry clutch doesn't matter unless they change something in it.

No lies here guys. This is exactly the pricing quoted to me by the service manager at BMW touring sports in Greenville, SC. They are the duc dealer in this area. Believe me, I was as shocked and confused as anyone. I have owned ducatis for 11 years now and with the new service pricing there I can assure you that thy will be doing all the sevice on my bike for as long as that pricing strategy continues. For my 1,000 km service the tech pulled my bike in at 0815 and was done with it a bit after 1100. I could see him the whole time and mine was the only bike he was working on.

BMW touring sports in Greenville, SC.

This would make a road trip very worthwhile.

Ain't no way that is accurate.

A new clutch pack from those guys is at least $400.00 for parts alone ( I could be wrong )

Front brake pad parts anywhere from $100.00 to $200.00 depending on the brand of pads, definitely on the higher side if genuine Ducati.

2 new exhaust valves?  Really? That would be engine apart, new head gasket(s), base gaskets, special order wait for weeks for the exhaust valves and a huge labor bill.

There's a misunderstanding somewhere.

If he got new cam belts that's almost $200.00 in parts.  A quick scan of the math and you can see that it doesn't add up

I'd love to see what was really done for $350.00 labor charge on an 1198 15,000 mile service.  [roll]

That'd get you an oil change, a new air filter and a lot of pencil check marks.   [laugh]

I hope to see his bill later
He's not real happy about their write up of the work order,
and plans to go in and get some clarification ???

That's only 2 hours away from me.....at those prices I'll stop doing the work myself and bring it down there. [laugh]

I'd like to hear others chime in that have used them for years and the condition and running order of their bikes.

To answer the original question..... Yes... $1500.00 is definitely in the ball park.

Some misinformation!!!...wax in my ear's, I guess :-\

New belts
adjust valves
New clutch pack
new fluids
front brake pads

he also said he got 10% disc...since he's an MSF instructor

I just sent them a service request for my 12k service.  I already have new belts and a new clutch that I installed in the last month, curious to hear what the quote coming back to me will be.

$1500 sounds spot on for that.

In the bay area where labor is about $100 per hour:

For liquid cooled 4V motors (1098, Monster S4R, Streetfighter), each major service is about $1100, includes valve check/adjust, new belts and new fluids.
That is about 9 hours of labor plus parts.
Interval is either 6000mi or 7500mi depending on the year.

For air cooled 2V motors (Monster 620/695/696/750/900/1100), each major service is about $500.
That's about 4 hours of labor plus parts.
Again, interval is either 6000mi or 7500mi depending on the year.

I'm from Clemson/Walhalla. Those guys at TS in Greenburg are nice guys. Bought a bike from them, but those numbers don't add up. The 600 mi. service is an oil change and looking at a bunch of stuff. Isn't it?  At $100 bucks or so an hour it's expensive to just look at a bunch of stuff. Oil and a filter is over $50.

FYI, $1300 for new belts, valve check and a custom PCIII map for my 2005 S4R at DucShop.  Alot of dosh but happy with how it runs, no more coughing at highway speeds.
