All right, so my brother and I decided to set up our bikes for our weights the other day. Pretty sure we did it right at we used the Racetech and Total Control method, but I just have this nagging feeling we missed something. When I set the the pre load on my forks I ended up screwing them in until only 1.5 lines were showing putting it at almost the most extreme adjustment. Does this seem normal?
Bike/rider specifics:
2006 S2R 1000 (Assuming no maintenance ever done on forks)
Rider is 165 LBS
Also once that was done the forks seemed to pogo a ton when testing at a complete stop, however while riding there didn't seem to be too much of an issue. Any thoughts from the knowledgeable suspension gurus?
Thanks in advance
front springs are pretty soft so your sag is probably about right. did you back the comp/rebound adjusters all the way out first? makes for a more accurate measurement.
did you average your low and high sag readings? sit on the bike and have your assistant push down on the front & release. measure. then have him lift up, release & measure. you'll probably see a big difference. average your readings for the proper setting.
these forks have a lot of "sticktion" and make static damping settings tough. seems the best method for adjusting damping is to just keep fooling with it when riding. standard settings are 6 clicks out for comp & rebound. make adjustments after riding for a while. when the fork oil gets hot it came make a big difference in your settings
Well we got it half right...we took the average but didn't zero out compression or rebounding. I did adjust the compression, but to be honest I noticed little difference and could only discern about 6 clicks total out of the 16 or whatever the manual says is available..

we used the Racetech and Total Control method
I was recently wanting to adjust my suspension to my weight as well. For those of us less familiar, what is the Racetech and Total Control method?
Thanks!

Racetech and Total Control method?
Racetech is a company that specializes in suspension parts and set up - they have a book that discusses suspension set up and tune
Total Control is a book or school by Lee Parks. The book, goes over the methodology for setting static sag and basic suspension tuning.
Depending on the monster you have you may be limited on what you can adjust. For example, the forks on the base monsters 6xx series only have external compression damping adjustment - you cannot alter the preload externally.
Correct, total control basically uses the same method as Racetech for setting sag. It's basically as Sofadriver described, most other methods simply have you measure the difference between loaded and unloaded with taking into account the difference in stiction (?) There is a ton of stuff on the web (as with anything) but for me I always feel better when someone gives direct advice...even on a basically anonymous internet forum where one has no idea of anyone's real knowledge level [laugh]. Not a shot a sofa, I am really laughing at myself, and sort of thinking about how things have changed. The saying used to be "I read it so it must be true" now I guess it is: I wikagoogletubed it so it must be true ;D
Stiction is static friction that needs to be overcome - when setting sag you're not measuring for that - you're working on the spring. Stiction is just a byproduct of the sliders moving against the oil seals and or other internal parts that may be moving against each other. Really bad Stiction can cause a fork to bind so you need to ensue that's not the case when setting suspension, as you'll get get false measurments.
