Title: How to replace, clone, and program black keys
Post by: Azurus on August 21, 2012, 06:31:23 AM
I figured I would post this all in one spot in case someone needs it for the future since I ran into this problem after purchasing my bike. My bike came with only a red key and 1 uncut black key, but this would apply for those who just have the Red Key. I pulled and modified some info provided by Brad Black and Speeddog from this thread (http://www.ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=57773.0 (http://www.ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=57773.0))

GET THE KEYS:
To program the keys yourself, you will require the Red Key and 2 Black Keys. To aquire more black keys you either have to order them from Ducati ($65 each), or get generic keys that match the same transponder type that Ducati uses. The key needed is a Silca KW17T5 transponder key. This is sometimes refered to as a "T5" transponder key for short. Ask the key supplier/shop if they have these or can order these. I have found some wholesale suppliers online that sell them for $15 each. If they don't have the keys, they may still be able to do the cloning for you if they have the right equipment. Ask the key shop if they use Ilco/Silca RW2 or RW3, Strattec Quick Code, Jet Smart Clone, or Bianchi Repli-code for their cloner. All these are capable of cloning the T5 key.

PROGRAMMING THE KEYS:

Notes* Make sure the battery terminals are connected correctly. Make sure to keep the other keys close, but AWAY from the ignition switch while you are are programming them to avoid interference from the other keys. If "OFF" is displayed at any time during this process on the display, then that means that the programming sequence aborted and did not work. Keep in mind that when you turn the keys ON and OFF you should not wait until gauges sweep out.

FWIW I was able to clone my red key - except the clone is a black 'red key'.  It is good to have a spare.
