Title: Need HELP!!!!
Post by: Ten Speed on August 25, 2012, 02:14:56 PM
I was walking in my garage this morning and I smelt gas. I saw a puddle of gas under my bike and saw this hose leaking gas....is this normal and where does this hose go??? It was just hanging down. I have no clue about bikes and I need some help. I'm freaking out. Thanks

Well I guess the first step is identifying what the other end of the hose is connected to.

Did you just fill up your tank?

The hose you are holding is an overflown drain line. It does not connect to anything. Its job is to simply drain excess fuel/fluid to the ground.

The charcoal canister receives both fuel vapor and over-filled fuel from the tank. Its job is to contain the fuel then dump the vapor into the combustion chambers for the engine to burn off.

Apparently I always overfill my tank, so I can't park in the sun until I ride for 10 miles.

Well it was very hot today and the garage was very warm. So Im guessing it was draining for some reason or another. Thanks guys I'm feeling a lot better now. I thought maybe the hose came off or something.

see the metal ring on the bottom corner of the engine directly below where that hose is? thats where the hose is supposed to go, just stuff it back in that ring. it's supposed to just hang down, and that ring just holds it so it doesnt flap in the breeze.

and yes, if the tank is completely full, and then temp increases, the fuel expands and will overflow, draining out that hose

It is possible for the charcoal canister to become loaded with raw fuel causing some running problems.

You should avoid overfilling if you intend to keep the canister.

One day my cannister got so full of fuel it plum fell right off!

Turns out the bracket made a handy spot to put my Ohlins reservoir though. :D

FWIW, the day BEFORE I shit-canned my vacuum petcock I'd replaced the fuel filter. I guess I tortured the (then 10 year old) OEM line just enough to put a tiny crack in it. came back to the garage an hour or so later to discover a half gallon of gas had leaked out onto my MC. Good thing my water heater was of the floor by 24", per code, or I probably would have had a explosion and fire.

Moral of the story: check your hoses early and often.
