Title: Creaking & Groaning Clutch
Post by: Stuka Pilot on September 03, 2012, 02:37:19 PM
My '07 S2R 1K clutch has gradually got noisier and noisier. I don't mean the normal Duc dry clutch clatter, I am talking about a worsening creaking and groaning noise as the clutch lever is released.

It is most apparent when the motor is hot and has worsened over the last few thousand miles. Total mileage is c 7K, about half of that is 2 up riding.

I fitted a ventilated cover, a. to allow some ventilation and b. cos it looks cool, but it has not helped one iota!

Is this normal, am I looking at a set of plates?

Thanks in advance.

Pretty common...

You can disassemble and clean the steel plates with a scotchbrite on a drill or right angle grinder.

If you had an extra curved steel plate to add to the stack it makes the fix last a long long time.

If you ask your local tech he might have one.

06 S2r1K here
My Barnett clutch plates with lots of K's on were groaning and shuddering on take off.
Read about how to fix so gave it a go.
Removed all the plates , cleaned them well then rubbed lithium grease into all the friction material.
Wiped them clean then reinstalled them swapping around the more worn ones with plates with more material.
Making sure I re installed in the correct order with the spring steel plate where it came from.
Smooth as silk now no noise no vibration.
Also through in an extra steel plate on the top of the stack which made up for the loss of stack height giving me
a longer friction zone.
Make sure you use pure lithium grease as it contains no friction modifiers which would make the plates slip.

I did mine 20K miles ago and added no grease.

It simply goes against every principle I've followed for a lot of years regarding friction material.

As always whatever works for you.

Duc
I was also very sceptical of this technique but as the clutch plates were getting on in life thought what the hell
Ill give it a go. Even though the friction material does differ between dry and wet clutch , wet does function
within a lubricated environment .
Any way it worked and worked very well . Still working now some 3000 ks later no grabbing no shrieking.
But maybe a Placebo effect as I also cleaned all the steel plates which were rusty and cleaned all the detritus from
the friction plates as well.
Also worked for a few others as noted in the original thread that inspired me to have a go.

+1 Periodic servicing of the clutch.
I run a closed cover so I have a look in there every third oil change or so.
I can't put grease on friction material either. Can't do it, feels so wrong. [laugh]

Besides the friction surfaces getting glazed, I reckon the worn friction material dust works like graphite powder, contributing to slipping and strange noises.

Gents - eventually found some time to put your advice into action.

Great advice, worked a treat and a very simple operation. The only tough bit was trying to identify which side of the concave plate was actually dished.

Thanks!

OOps...should have mentioned it has a punch mark on the concave side.

Glad it worked.
