Ok, my first post on this forum but having taken on the repair of two S4's I am sure you will hear from me daily! :-[ ;D ;D
My question to get going regards the silencers, the bike I am working on at the moment has two whole cans but they are quite badly scratched and each has a dent on the forward end. My question is what are my options? Can and should these be repaired and if so how? Can I wrap them in a carbon or some heatproof wrap or is it possible to re-skin them? Are there cans available that are very affordable to replace them and if so are there options in terms of size and type of can/
I would love to find a single unit to bring both pipes into - something mounted under the tail for instance or a box like the new monsters and diavel. Please help. Also if I took these off for repair is it safe to say the bike is not to be run until they are refitted? I noticed the silencer just slip fits onto the pipe end, is there not a small cap or something that slips onto the exhaust end that replaces the big silencer. I appreciate all advise and opinions on this matter.
It would really help if you specified year and model. My 2012 M696 has the stock cans with heat shields. I was quoted $1100 US per can, not including heat shield. Leo Vince makes slip ons that are significantly less expensive and look better than the stock Ducati parts, and weigh less.
The S4 and all double sided swing arm monsters (excluding the 696) can cross fit the silencers. if you want stock ones, post in the Parts Wanted section and someone will have some for cheap. Ebay is also a likely source. The stock ones aren't desirable items so it's not uncommon to find almost new take offs for $50-100 for a set.
As noted, there's a wide selection of low and high mount slip-ons that can be used by all the older monsters. Now and udner seat or box might be tougher. Quat-D makes a system called the Ex-box. http://www.qdexhaust.it/products/DUCATI/Monster_S4/scheda.html (http://www.qdexhaust.it/products/DUCATI/Monster_S4/scheda.html) But I'm not sure where you'd get it now. Motowheels or MonsterParts or another sponsor might be able to track one down.
As far as other 2-1 set ups.. I think some company was doing them.. but I'm not sure.
Regarding running without. I can be done - but the bike will run poorly and LOUDly
