Title: Use a GPS on your motorcycle?
Post by: Cher on September 09, 2012, 05:13:46 AM

How many of you use a GPS on your bike when you travel?  If so, what kind and would you recommend it?

I currently use a garmin 1450 with a Ram cradle and mount--both bikes.

Garmin Zumo 220  [thumbsup]

Time consuming to plot a long ride because of all the way-points that needs to be identified, but when that is done it's very easy to follow. Bring a map to identify way-points!

I put the tom tom from the Fiat in my tank bag and usually just use paper directions in the clear park of the bag.  When I think I missed a turn I pull it out and and show myself that, yes, I have indeed missed my turn.   ;D

Garmin zumo 550. "Designed by bikers", Stereo Bluetooth headset-ready, glove-friendly touchscreen (which means you can place calls on your iPhone without  getting it out of your rainsuit pocket), plays MP3s, traffic option, blah, blah. Pricey, but worth it, IMHO.

do you have garmins mapsource ? software

i had garmin gps years ago and their pc software made it very easy to plan routes and upload to the gps

could also download data later and see where you went and how fast  [evil]

I have that software - maybe it's just me, but I've seldom been so underimpressed  [thumbsdown] Compared to a modern trip planner like Googlemaps  [thumbsdown] [thumbsdown] [bang]  ...besides I don't carry a computer, so it's useless for me.

iPhone - garmin navigon.  Not really happy with their app policy change.  The traffic stop light photo camera warning addition is useless as it has never warned me.
If you have unlimited data, waze iis good app.

Wisepilot on BB Curve 9300. I think its available for other smartphones. Not a bad app for the price.

Will notify and allow others to track you along your route.

Likes to get you from point A to point B the quickest route. Still trying to figure out how to program my own routes.

Can't recommend it yet, but it is another option.

BlackBerry 9300. Tapatalk. FTW.

Garmin Zumo 550.  I've had it since 2007 or therabouts and it has been fairly flawless.  The only hiccup is it will overheat and get slow after about 6 hours in summer temperatures.  All buttons are left hand and the touch screen is glove friendly.

Wow!  Tons of information  [thumbsup]  Thanks for all the replies.  I'm just getting started investigating what would work best for me and still fit somewhere conveniently on my 999.  It's looking to be a lot harder than I thought  [bang]

Garmin Nuvi 750 with RAM cradle and mount on my '08 Multistrada. (I have another Nuvi 750 I use in the car.) Unlike Zumo, it's not waterproof as I keep ziploc baggies handy in case of rain.

Gas cap camera mount + Ram ball would work as a good mounting point if you don't find some place up around the gauge cluster.

OK, so I've been experimenting with Alan's Garmin Nuvi 550.  It is simply inscrutable  [bang]  I've never seen such wasted effort just to plot a ride route.  I really do hate it.

Can anyone with a TomTom tell me anything about the ease of plotting custom ride routes?  I'm seriously ready to just wing-it with *%$&$@@! paper maps for the Arkansas trip in a couple of weeks.

I have a Garmin 440 or 400. can't remember.
Great sat nav but, take a map as well. I used mine in France, it got me where I wanted to go but you never really know where you are IYSWIM.
It took me on an 80 mile detour, I knew it was wrong but without a map you have to trust it.

Well, FINALLY, the Garmin Nuvi is programmed for each of the four days of our Arkansas trip.  Looks exactly like the way I plotted it out on google so I think we're good to go.  Also got the Arkansas board of tourism to send me three current road maps so they'll get marked up accordingly for each of the day's individual ride routes just in case I need a back up.

So, with less than a month to go, the route is in the can  [thumbsup]

Next step, secure my RAM mounts for the GPS to the 999's top triple.  Should be an interesting exercise in... engineering.  Yeah, engineering.  That's it  [bang]  [laugh]

Of course if any of you are having second thoughts on this Arkansas Extravaganza Oct 19 - 22, no worries - let's ride  [Dolph]

Just got the new Dunlop Q2's broke in and the replacement tail running lights will be replaced this week or next as time allows.  Not sure why both of them burnt out but I'm hoping that's all it is, fuses look good.  A little more general maintenance and I'll be ready to go.  Really looking forward to this trip.   [Dolph]
