Title: Fork hypocondria or an issue? Lots of spring noise
Post by: Slide Panda on September 10, 2012, 07:00:59 PM
One of my forks is giving me a bit of a fit. They are out of the bike. When i compress one, the only noise is the oil moving. The other there's a lot more noise which sounds like the spring rubbing on the inside of the slider. Definitely metal on metal and has that 'springy' sound I've heard before. Given that I'm a little OCD, this noise is bugging the crap out of me.

New bushing are on the way, part of the reason they are out. But motorcycle-superstore has the wrong sizes in their filters for monsters. They come up with 41mm dia bushings... so 43.

Well, why don't you open them up?  Nothing better than having fluid all over the garage floor...

I have... pulled the spring spacers etc, replaced the oil and reassembled. And now disassembled again currently waiting on fork bushings

IIRC, the springs may have a phosphate coating.  It should rub off where it is wearing.  Maybe that can help determine what is making the noise.  Maybe it is not seated correctly?

Sitting in the vice, the spring is centered up and isn't leaning or obviously wonky so I'm a bit stumped. But I haven't had a look for any rubbing signs yet - so that's on tap for when I get home.

A light down the tube doesn't reveal anything obviously different from one slider leg to the other. But something's up... More surgery may be on tap  >:(

So doing a bit more reading around the webs - this seems to be a common issue with Race Tech springs after a fresh install or rebuild.

I found a few accounts of folks who had similar noises after installing race tech springs. One fellow even noted calling them and his account said that they were aware of this and it's common with their springs and the noise will reduce or go away over time with the mechanical action on the forks.

I only noted this noise after recently replacing a weeping seal. And have very few miles on it since. So it seems it's not such a big deal and time should resolve.
