Title: Factory dry clutch pressure plate question
Post by: Scoober1103 on September 12, 2012, 12:03:30 AM
Hey DMFers, I pulled the dry clutch out of my M1100 (9000km) to service, clean and check the plates and bearings and noticed the standard cast alloy pressure plate had a few holes at the outer edge of where the springs seat!
It appears to be a flaw in the casting rather then being warn through and they aren't cracks but not totally sure. As it is the only one I have seen thought I would consult the greater monster community!

Is it time (justification) for a new billet plate, collars, springs and cover? [evil]

Or is this common with the factory pressure plates?

Thanks in advance for any info and help on this.

Cheers,

Scott

To be on the safe side (foolproof keyword: safety) I suggest getting an open cover and fancy new pressure plate ;D

 [laugh] True.

Seriously, the oem pressure plate is lighter than many fancy looking aftermarket ones. I would only consider a replacement if it was  significantly lighter and improved clutch function. I put my money into better springs, and light plates, basket and drum. I have dropped 1.69 kgs of rotating mass. (Edit: I have the lightweight Vee Two steel basket).
The oem pressure plate got VHT hi temp engine enamel.

Spose I'm a heretic. ;)

That's a valid point too, have plenty of other things I could be doing but the springs and collars certainly need a pretty up as rust wasn't a good look!

Thanks again guys!

Just out of curiosity I weighed my stock cast pressure plate and with the bearing installed it runs at 292g! One brand of billet plate advertised claimed a weight of 284g with bearing and I noticed it was pretty heavily machined with lots of cut outs and ventilation!

What's that 6g gonna cost?

Skip a beer mate and save 2-300 hundred. ;)

the point of those heavier ones is to protect the clutch post more than anything else. replacing drums aint fun. :-X

I don't think any pressure plate protects the clutch hub.

You must mean a heavy cover.

The 1100 clutch basket and plates are alloy already. Correct? Is the drum still steel with a cush drive?
You could save a pound of rotating mass with a billet drum if Ducati still run the old drum design. NGR and SSR have billet drums via forum sponsors. Add in clutch springs and billet retainers of your choice with Ti bolts and a painted pressure plate and all is not lost!  [evil]

Clutch plates are indeed alloy as well as the basket (very scientific magnet test so could be another material)!

For more useless information I weighed the stock exhaust cans as well as the stock midpipe and flapper motor:

Stock M1100 exhaust cans - 3.2kg each
Stock flapper vavle midpipe - 1.6kg
Flapper valve servo motor   - 0.5kg

And the new gear:

SC project alloy cans - 1.5kg each
Flapper-less midpipe  - 1.2kg
Duc.EE (yet to arrive)- ?? bugger all

Cheers
