Im thinking of flipping my shifter linkage so first is up and the rest of the gears are down..race style. Anyone try this for their street bike?

Be careful when you adjust the rod.
Those heim joints can be fragile on the threaded part.

I've flipped and ridden (on ducs (848, M900) and my Strom). I also run a straight gp shift on my S2R (no linkage). No linkage is the way to go. The shifts are sweet! The real thing is to figure out if the backwards shift pattern freaks you out. Some people don't like it because they have more than one bike, and on some bikes it is near impossible (time and money fix everything) :D.
If I ride the duc more than the Strom, I get lazy when I switch and miss shifts on the Strom.
Just double check that it actually shifts before riding. There are some locations that look good but don't provide the range necessary to actually shift.
I also run GP pattern and +1 on the heim joints being fragile! I love it, it feels much more natural to me, and I do occasionally miss a shift when switching to a bike with a "conventional" pattern.
Dirty D, can you post some pics of your non linkaged S2R? I would like to see that. How is better in your opinion?

The difference comes in length of throw and solidity (feel) of shift. The range of motion to shift up or down is comparatively small, and compared to a linkage feels a lot more precise.
It's hard to quantify, but I can feel the dog engagement and whether the shift "took." On the Strom (I recall it better than the other "linkage" setups because I ride it more) the shift drum does not always rotate far enough to set up the next gear (I believe the technical term for the cause of this syndrome is "pussyfoot," it happens because I didn't shift with enough force).
The "straight" setup on the Duc requires less force, and should I pussyfoot the shift I know it.
If I could keep the GP shift pattern on the Strom and remove the linkage, I would. Not that I think the GP pattern is intrinsically better, I just like it. Plus it makes unsanctioned test rides more interesting [evil]
The setup I am running really only has clearance for sport/sport touring moto-specific boots. I have had a few sets of boots not fit between the peg and shifter.
pretty much any shifter could be used from any metric bike provided the length and connection "hole" are proper size, yes?

You might find other brands have different spline count even if the shaft is roughly the same diameter.
The problem I've had with solid shifters is finding the correct length with stock rearsets. YMMV

I can't tell how long the one you posted is, but it will be like mine and you will have to reach inboard with your toe to snag it for downshifts.
I can say this one will provide more room for boots, but you might have difficulty getting the peg high enough for comfort.
Were I shopping today, I would prefer the eccentric adjuster to the silly nonsense mine uses.
