We have all heard of 2 valve air cooled Duactis 750 and 900 models reaching phenominal high mileages 150,000+ miles with little more then head refreshes and new rings ,but what about 4v models I have heard of a 91,000 mile 851 which has been very solid and sound for its 2 owners .

Gary Eagan (noted endurance rider, record setter, Iron Butt guy) used an ST4 for a few years.  He set several records with it -- shortest time coast-to-coast, etc. -- and racked up about 225K before moving on to his next bike.  It's at the Barber museum now.

Well, I can't answer your question at all... but I have to add that I'm really, REALLY hoping I can get even just half of the mileage of PhilB out of my new M1100 EVO without any issues other then Maintenance! ;D

I've got a bit over 50k miles on my S4.

Haven't had to replace any rockers.

Same here.  I have almost 9,000 miles on mine now but I've had a few issues with it already.  Hoping that everything is worked out now and the trouble free mileage begins.

I'm pretty sure the OP meant 4 valves per head, not 4 valves per engine.

My 748 just hit 20K miles. I've replaced 2 rockers, and all of the in-tank fuel lines within the last 7K miles of ownership.

I replaced all 8 opener rockers with megacycle rockers on my S4 when the bike had only 5000 miles on it although on 5 were duds, now it has 25,000 and no hassles its very reliable ,I have 3 ducatis so each gets used so it will take me many years to get each machine to colossal miles

Did 7500 mls on my s4 in the first year of owner ship and it's my first ducati only issue was a cooked regulator and a fried battery which fried a couple of micro chips in the clocks but was a cheap fix at €25 so I'm very happy.

Sounds like my '02 748. At 5600 miles, I had four bad rockers, replaced them with OEMs because they were $45 each back then, made it through the 12k, but by 18k I had more bad (including at least one replacement), and I replaced all the openers with Megacycle. I think I have 25k or so on the bike, now.

I have a little over 45k miles on my '05 S4R (996).  With 4 bikes now the miles will accumulate more slowly than in the first few years of ownership.

Beyond routine maintenance, the only real problem I've had (or didn't cause :P) was a broken fork shift spring and that was fixed under warranty.

There was a guy from Texas (I think) on the old board who must have 80k miles on a 996 S4R by now.

Hmmm...that might be a possibility just for the ridiculousness of it all.   ;D
