I have a new to me 2010 M1100S with 900 miles on it. I'm trying to decide on what oil to use. Did this bike come with synthetic? I'd like to make life easy and use Mobil 1 10-40 as that's what I use in the BMW.
The owners manual recommends using Shell Ultra 4 15W-50 which is a full synthetic in my 2012 Monster 1100 EVO.
You can probably download the owners manual for your specific model if you don't have a copy to find out what they recommend for your bike.
any good motorcycle synthetic will be fine 10-40 0r 15-50w,,I use Motul 15-50w
yes you can use Mobil 1 MOTORCYCLE 10w-40 synthetic oil in your bike.
the shell ultra mentioned above is not even available in the U.S., not even at ducati dealerships. mobil 1 actually tends to be the highest recommended for our bikes
My M1100 rolled out of the dealership with Motul 7100 10W40 full synthetic.
When I take it to see Brad Black it gets Shell Ultra.
When I change oil myself I like to use Motul 7100. Coz its red [laugh].
My tenant is a AMSOIL dealer, I would think that should be as good or better right? (Ive had the maintainance done at the dealer till now...)
that amsoil stuff is no too much more expensive than the top of the line suff.
All the reports ive seen either put royal purple or amsoil at the top. but all the amsoil stuff puts royal purple near the bottom end.
I put Vavoline synthetic in mine for he break in cause it was 7.99 a quart. the mobil 1 is 12.99 and i was goign to change it out at 1,000 miles anyway.
I am throwing in mobil 1 synthetic afterwords though.
if your m1100 is a dry clutch, i tend to just buy car oil. its only the wetclutch guys that need to have to use moto specific.

oh yea why was i thinkin dyker?
sunset is coming up huh
I use Motul E Tech its a POA
Both the Ducati and BMW have a dry clutch. Mobile 1 10-40 comes two ways, standard and moto specific. Moto specific has addatives for a wet clutch which we don't have. Can we get away with using the standard Mobile 1 10-40?

Many do.
My only question is the ability of the 'car oil' to meet the EP needs of the transmission.
While the base stock is superior, synthetics do have additives. The additives that may, or may not, be in the moto specific oil may, or may not be in 'car oil'.
I suggest you read the oil thread... http://www.ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=1912.0 (http://www.ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=1912.0)
Zinc and other high pressure additives have been reduced or removed from gasoline car oil. This may lead to premature cam or gear wear. I suggest using either moto or diesel specific oil.
there are so many kinds of diesel oil, i was wondering which one is a good diesel oil.
When you really think about it, its ~$12/qt for top of the line moto specific oil, if the best diesel oil is $10. why not just get moto specific?

Shell Rotella is good oil.

Shell Rotella T6 comes to mind, full synthetic and 15W-40 would work well for us plus it is commonly available. Really, any brand name full synthetic inan approved weight would be fine. Damn, Nate beat me to it.
$2 a quart less? That would be a little less than $8 an oil change. $8/3000 miles is .267 cents a mile saved. With all that money saved before you know it I could buy...ummm...not much. The only rational reason would be convenience.

T6 is 5w40 not 15w. It is JASO MA, but 5w... hmm.. might be too light...

The regular T is 15w40 but is not synthetic.. it's also JASO MA.
(of course you can mix them 50/50 and have a semi-synth that is essentially a 10w40)

I stand corrected. Unfortunately, Mobil Delvac full syn is also 5W-40.

My DR650 gets Caltex (Chevron) Delo 400 diesel oil.

Motul 7100 full synth @ A$100 per 4 litre.
Caltex Delo 400 diesel @ A$37 per 5 litre.
So the thumper gets diesel oil and loves it.
That Shell Rotella T6, available in Oz? Or is it under a different name?
I mean, full synth, plenty of additives for the tranny, 5-40, good price, sounds like a good winter oil at least.
I'd get the AMSOIL for cost, he wouldnt charge me over his price. To be honest, I'd prefer Royal Purple, but hey, its what hes got!
Does anyone have the filter disection thread handy? I feel like K&N and WIX were the same filter inside, but K&N has that handy nut...
Sidebar:
When I put a big lumpy cam in my Jeeps straight 6, comp cams recomended a sh*t ton of moly on the cam/lobes/timing set/distributor gears/bearings/and lifters. Then for break-in Rotella T6 with a bottle of STP. (3000rpm for 30 minutes, raising the rev to 3500 for 20 seconds every 5 minutes) Then run Rotella T6 with a bottle of STP for the next 500 miles, then my synthetic of choice (the suggested AMSOIL, RP, or Mobil1.)
Cam broke and lifters broke in PERFECTLY. Unfortunately the cam walked and I blew up the distributor drive/driven gears after 600 miles. Comp sent me a new one, wrecked that during the second break in (lobes/lifters looked good though) went back to the stock cam and 5/12 blown lifters and it runs fine. [bang]
Expensive lesson. Next spring: digital ignition with square wave trigger and external oil pump= NO DISTRIBUTOR GEARS!! MOAH POWAH!!

Nope, not by that name anyway. Go here and scroll down for oils:

Ok, I gotta ask. How did the "Oz" nickname come about? (its been bugging me for weeks now)

The owner of a tree company with a huge fleet of trucks in the northeast is also an owner of Royal Purple.
They tried it in their fleet...
They don't use it any more.
Take from that what you will.

So...they own a company and wont use their own products? HAHA. Yeah I guess the AMSOIL will work. Plus...they offer oil analysis...not sure what I would do with such a tool..but its nice to have I guess..
Oil analysis can benefit you by telling what is in the oil that shouldn't be there...
like metals, meaning possible part failure or simply silicon/dirt which could indicate poor air filtration.
People that runs K&N air filters typically suffer high silicon levels.
It benefits those that extend their service intervals the most.
