Hi all, I just picked up a new 796 (2012) and I have the 2 keys and code card. I always like to have an extra spare (so no matter what I'm never down to a last key) locked in a secure location for absolute emergency situations. I know I can get clone keys (will probably just do that) but was wondering if you can have more than 2 original ducati keys actually programmed to the bike?
I can cut the key and do the clone if necessary (not the issue), just a stickler for OEM or high quality aftermarket upgrades and wanted to know.
Thanks to you all, hoping to be able to contribute positively to this forum in the near future.
According to the owners manual the dealer can program keys with the code card.
I was TOLD by the dealer that only 2 keys can be programmed to the bike at a time. And every time you program a key, you will have to do both of them.
I have a spare key that is cut but not programmed.

He may be right...
but from the manual...
Duplicate keys
If you need additional keys, contact your DUCATI Service
Centre with all the keys you have in your possession and
your CODE CARD.
The Ducati Service Centre will program all the new keys as
well as any keys you already have.
You may be asked to provide proof that you are the
legitimate owner of the motorcycle.
The codes for any keys not present during the memory
programming procedure are cancelled, to ensure that any
keys that may have been lost can no longer be used to start
the engine.
never heard this. go elsewhere if they want to limit the number.
There are two ways to do this. Basically, the keys just have a number written into them and your ignition checks that number against what has been programmed into the system as an acceptable key.
You can get new ones programmed from the dealer, OR you can just get a blank key and take it to a good locksmith who knows how to clone keys. He can just duplicate the number of an existing, working key onto your new, blank one.
E-Mail the gentleman at motorcyclekeys.com. I just bought 3 keys from him. He answers e-mails, he's knowledgable, he ships quickly, can't recommend enough. He knows exactly what your options will be. Also he only charges like $18.00 a key versus whatever ridiculous number the dealer wants.
Stay away from the chinese transonder keys on e-bay, I bought some and they were just plastic; no transponder in them.

Tks iltl32 - I do have some clonable blanks that I will probably cut and program (saving a few blanks for a couple of people in need before I use some for myself) but more of a general inquiry - the motoguzzi key head is just bigger and bulkier and I am a bit of a stickler for OEM and quality aftermarket (as in upgrades) when possible.
I'll eventually try adding a third chip to the system and see what happens, will report my findings!
Tks to all of those that chimed in.
