Title: Fly Screen: Fun Facts
Post by: El-Twin on October 01, 2012, 10:11:04 AM
I, like many others, have often wondered, "Just what the hell does that thing do?"

It doesn't look that great, although it doesn't offend me either. I'm inclined to like a little wind protection if I can get it, so I conducted a *scientific* experiment of my own this past weekend.

On the freeway at 70-75, the air is perfectly still in the protected zone above the instruments. Bringing my hand straight back to the belly area below the rib cage, the air remains undisturbed. Raising the hand into the airflow traces a path striking the body at the bottom of the rib cage, and up.

The meaning of all this, you ask? That damn little plastic screen really does protect the lower half of the torso, preventing the wind blast from pushing the rider backward and relieving the arms and legs from bracing accordingly. The wind blast against the chest and helmet is nicely offset by the slightly aggressive riding position.

Apparently, Ducati really did test that thing.

*Homework assignment completed*  :D

My test is looking at where the bugs die. My Zero Gravity ST (touring) screen sends them to their death on my shoulders' outer half and lower edge and up of the visor. 6' 3" tucked in, my head and arms are inside the air stream and I reach the top 10 mph that way.

Stopintime. your touring screen compared to the new monster fly screen is night and day.
I'm not sure you would find much calm space for your frame on an 1100

I have the Ducati Performance smoked screen. it tends to have a more narrow calm area, but a bit taller space.
I have the gauges lowered quite a bit and I feel I have just a bit more room behind this screen compared to the fly screen. Mind you my speeds are a bit higher for these comparisons.

at the lower speeds, I would say the DP screen wins hands down over the stock fly screen.

For your next homework assignment, remove the flyscreen and repeat your test.  Only then can we know how much it does or doesn't do.

I don't have a fly screen.  I've not noticed any wind issues until you get into that turbulent sport behind a tractor trailer where the wind comes back together behind the truck.

This is a scientific as I'm going to get: The fly screen looks like ass, therefore it is sitting on a shelf in my garage.

A hell, if I didn't let anything that looked like ass on my bikes I'd have to put myself on a shelf.... [drink]

You know what...? You're right!

Just when I thought I'd turned in all the homework for this class.  :)

It'll count for extra credit.   [thumbsup]

Ahhh... well that's different then. I can go for some bonus points, just in case.  [cheeky]

No need for that. You can ride my Triumph T-100. 8) THAT will teach you that Ducati owns a wind tunnel. ;)

Sweet standard/cruiser..., but by comparison, 70 MPH is like riding into a hurricane.
