Hello all,
Back again with another issue on my '99 M750 (bought in May) :( A couple weeks ago I was riding with my roommate at night. All was fine most of the night. When we started up our bikes and headed home I saw my speedometer needle go totally out of whack, going up to probably 70mph (I had barely started to move) before dropping down to zero where it remains to this day. Not sure if this is a cause or a coincidence, but I accidentally rode away with my kickstand down. It hit the ground pretty forcefully and shot up into the proper position (it seems fine and functional), and then I noticed the speedometer not working, and later the odometer. I checked and lubed the inner cable, which didn't fix it, so I decided to replace it. Ordered one from Ducati, installed it and nothing has changed. I could also replace the drive at the wheel but that's another $65 or so plus another two weeks of waiting; not the worst thing in the world but also makes me think about moving to a different system like the Veypor I just saw mentioned on another thread when I searched this issue http://www.veypor.com/veypor.html (http://www.veypor.com/veypor.html) (anyone with experience?). I'd like to explore other options to fiddle around with the existing parts, the instrument cluster and the drive, and see if there's something in there I can mess with. What suggestions do you all have to look for? Could there be something in the speedometer itself that could be loose/disconnected? How bout the drive? Quick side question, is there a way to make all the warning bulbs flash so I can check to see if my newly replaced fuel gauge bulb is working or if there's a wiring issue instead? Thanks everyone! Not sure where I'd be without this forum besides pissed.
Sam
There could be a lot of stuff wrong in the speedometer itself, but more likely it is the cable or drive. The drive is a simple worm gear. Remove the cable at the speedometer. Insert your old cable. Spin quickly. Does the speedometer move? Then it is good. Now spin the front wheel and observe the cable you just installed. Does the cable turn? If so, you probably didn't get the cable seated properly . Cable doesn't turn? Remove it at the drive end. Spin the wheel. Does the drive turn? Also, inspect the drive for cracks.
