Yes I know, the opinions about my new fave monster are bipolar, love or loathe.  I love, love, love!  I am anxiously awaiting it's arrival at the dealership and can't wait to take her for a spin and explore some mods. 

I want this thread to stay positive and hopefully people can post here first with their pics when they pick up their new 696. 

I repeat:  If you do NOT LOVE the 696, feel free NOT to chime in, start your own thread to bash and I will feel free NOT to chime in.

I watched a video about the new 696 and I'm impressed. They put a lot of thought into it, and I believe it will be a very nice ride.

Okay, I'll stay positive.  I'm positively glad I bought my '08 S4RS Tricolore as I feel it's a fine (and probably final) testament to the classic Monster look.  As an old phart, I'm a huge fan of the classic shape we've all come to know and love.  That being said, congratulations on the new purchase.  I too am waiting to see one in the flesh at the dealership soon.  I have a feeling that it'll be better in real life than in pictures, much like the 999 was.  As with so many things, time will be the judge.  I'll bet that over time the new Monster will be a success and find a place in many hearts and garages.  And just like the old body style, once the aftermarket gets hold of it you'll be able to mod the bejeezus out of it and truly make it your own.  Again, congratulations, and keep us posted on how you like it and what you do to it.

The fact that so many either love or hate the 696 means, IMO, they did something right.

Glad you started a positive thread on the 696.  The -bash the 696- on the old DML was sophomoric and its negativity was tiring.
I dig the look of the 696 and I look forward to seeing what we do with them.  The exhaust looks awkward but invites an attractive and performance oriented
fix.  If I had one, I'd need a fairing of some kind so I look forward to the aftermarket coming up with some options.

What's the purpose of the fast idle switch? 

I actually like it a lot.  The only thing keeping me from doing it is it's a sideways upgrade from my modded S2R.  As soon as they release the equivilant of the m900 or s4r in the new body style I'll be all over it.  With some monster 101 type basic mods like different cans and clip ons it will look mean as hell and go like no monster before it.

I'm starting to think about the 696 like I did a girl I used to date. Not unattractive, but sort of odd looking from some angles. Still a lot of fun to ride.

I was all about the 696 when i first started doing research on it. All the reviews are more or less very possitive. Nothing but positive reviews when they talk about the ride. Then i started to have a crush on the way the 695 looks (dark on both is for me). that full trellis just makes me excited. then i look at the 696 and see that alluminum (i think) thing for rear structure and it turns me off. WHY COULDN'T IT BE A FULL TRELLIS!!!!!!! >:( 
really though, is there any reason you knowledgable people can think of that would make them chose that hybrid frame?

either way i'm going to ride both to see which one tickles my special spot that makes decisions for me ;)

The Trellis/Al configuration is what Ducati uses on its MotoGp race bike.  Some on the old DML speculated it was done on the 696to save money but
I think it is a tech advance.  The MotoGp's bike has a minimal frame, just enough to hold the forks and engine together. 

The full trellis looks so bad ass but i'de probably get used to the duo frame if it rides as good as all the reviews say.
 I do like the bike though....its a tough decision.

I'm totally diggin the 696.  I'm thinking it'd make an awsome replacement for my wife's R6 since I can't seem to entice her toward a Sport Classic. 

As for full trellis (swingarm) ... there have been more non-full trellis Ducatis than trellised swingarms so it's not that great a departure from practical design.  I don't see what the big deal is with this minor change.  /shrug  But then again- I like it!

I only had three days to get to know the 696 for the test, and while there are a few minor issues the bike is a huge improvement over the outgoing 695.

My first post here.....came over from the other place.
I put down a deposit in Feb.....the 696 will be my first bike.......over doing it? Maybe....
My dealer has one so I went over this past Saturday, felt great.....levers need adjusting.
I am #2 out of 24 on the waiting list and #1 got his red 696 so if the next one is pearl white, it's mine......should have it within 2 weeks at the latest.

Hey 696, were you the same name over on the other board?  You'll remember I had a deposit on a 696 and then bailed to buy my s2r1k.  Well, if you didn't hear, I wrecked it on Thursday and it MAY be totaled.  The forks and steering head may be the issues.  If so, I will likely get back in line for a 696 or something similar.  Apparently I can't handle the big ones without blowing my wad. 

I've been thinking about getting a motorcycle for  a while but I never had a bike move me in that direction. I've ridden on my brother's cruizers but they really bored me to tears. When I saw the 696 it was instant love! I am expecting my local dealer to get one in by the end of the week and I can't wait to get over there and see how it feels. I hope to have one by the end of summer. Maybe sooner. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw all the negative posts on the 696... but then again my daily driver is  a Jeep and (if you didn't know) that's another camp where tradition reigns supreme. But every new jeep takes time to gain acceptance and I just assumed this is whats happening here as well. They'll come around. They always come around. And those who won't will go buy up the classic examples. Just like for jeeps, vettes, and about any other vehicle that gains a cult following.

I have drooled over photos and reviews of the 696 since i first found out about it's release. I have been imagining a pearl S4RS colour scheme on one. White wheels, Black front fender (or carbon) Red frame and stripe and pearl tank etc. Anyone any good with photoshop to produce a pic with the termigoni system and this colour scheme? been having a bit of trouble imagining it. Cannot wait for it to be released in Australia!! ;D

When the 696 was announced I was lukewarm on the idea. I REALLY wanted an S2R800. BUt was more likely to get an older M900 as a project bike.

Then I realized I already had too many project bikes. And I'd like to have one bike that's just plug and play, turn the key and ride, no superbike ergos or acres of plastic to worry about... and now im' reading all the reviews and I have to admit I really want a 696 now...

I'm kinda diggin the white... or maybe black... Though I'd probably paint it some other color right away. This project bike thing is a sickness ya know...

it's actually his boot not the oil filter. In the article if you read the caption below the pic it says "my boot is on fire". I doubt any motorcycle company would be that stupid as to have the first touchdown point as the oil filter [bang]

I thought the same thing at first, that it was his boot touching down.  Then I realised how his left foot is positioned on the bike, how high up and back it is...  :'(    So imagine where his right foot would be on the other side of the bike.  I think it is the oil filter touching down.  If it's not the oil filter scrapping pavement, then tell me where the oil filter is.

It's obviously his boot.  An oil filter scraping wouldn't smoke like that.  The oil filter is in the shadow between the camera and his foot.

I just had a look at my 696.

The filter is sorta in that position, but I really think it's well out of the way, the photo is misleading, as his black boot is indistinguishable from the black oil filter. If it *was* the filter then the filter would be hanging out as the perspective of the oil filter is all wrong in the photo - i.e. it's the boot behind we're seeing scrape.

The downpipe looks as likely to scrape as the filter (and that's also well out of the way too). I tried to take photos, but they didn't come out well as it's dark here. I can take photos in the light tomorrow.

Note the journo also says it's his boot - wouldn't he want the scoop if he identified a design flaw?

I will say that the charcoal filter on the bike in the 'boot scrape' photo is fugly.

Fortunately, it's not required in the UK:

LUCKILY, that's what Monsters are for..Modding!! 

I'm going to test ride it Tuesday at lunch.  The store isn't too far from some twisties so I'll report back.

I'm not convinced that I love it, but it certainly is growing on me. The original Monster elicited reactions just as strong back when it was introduced as the new Monster is now.

My BMW Z4's design caused much gnashing of teeth when it was unveiled, as did that of the 7-series. You wouldn't believe the hate heaped upon the cars and their designer Chris Bangle. Many didn't think they should even be called BMW's.  Now, they just look like BMW's to most people.

Here are my thoughts.

Fit and Finish is top notch. Looks so much better in person. Clutch and Brake lever's are really far away for my short stubby fingers. Mirrors seem really functional. Everything looks really beefy on the bike. Thick Trellis, Thick Sub Frame, Thick Swing Arm, Thick rear sets etc. The seat seems to be made for women. If you have a package its a rather painful seat. You sit way up front and you cant really sit back on the seat. Basically you sit right on your Boys  :-\

HDP was basically empty. I guess no one was as interested as with the 1098  :P
Now I bet you it would have been standing room only if Ducati announced a 1098 Monster.

I give it a  [thumbsup] I could see myself owning one down the road.

I've had one out for a ride and I'll say that it is a strong improvment on my S2R800.  It's also beautiful for those who can accept that things can't or shouldn't stay the same forever. [thumbsup]

I really like it, saw it in person yesterday. It's a cool bike.

I went and looked at one yesterday....I almost regret looking at it because I want one now :)  I think I could even stand that ugly headlight [cheeky]

Saw one today, as usual the local dealer had it on a display stand with a "Please Do NOT Sit" sign on it.
Looks way better in the flesh, I like it, build quality is top notch.

I had the chance to demo the 696 on Saturday, but opted to take the S2R 1000 out first, so I could do a back to back comparison.  Unfortunately, I got bumped from the next ride (since people who didn't have a chance to sign up for previous ride had dibs).  I did ride behind it and the Termi's sounded glorious.  All sorts of cracks and pops... loved it.  Anyway, I'm kicking myself for not trying the 696 first. 

As an aside, I liked the S2R, but didn't like the limited right foot room.  I like to ride with the balls of my feet, and I couldn't get my right foot comfy; I think it was rubbing against the exhaust.

The 696 rocks! I especially like the GP style swingarm. I wonder how much weight it has shed?...cast aluminum right?

I saw it for the first time on Friday and rode it on Saturday. I had pre-ordered hoping it was better than the 695 I had test ridden.
It does look much better in person, than any picture I've seen. The dealer here had a dark one. I sold a 07 CBR looking for more comfort and this is a winner. My issues with the 695 and previous designed frame where chassis flex, poor brakes and seriously down on power. The 696 solved all three. I couldn't upset the chassis, braking hard and down shifting into 1st gear in a down hill left hander. I could feel the slipper clutch working and unlike the 695, the rear swing arm/wheel didn't seem to flex or break traction under hard use. Being 5'8 the mirrors were positioned well for me and useable. I could see  how someone taller, might think them useless however.

I went away, impressed and glad I ordered one. Now when the first white one hits the dealer, it's mine.

It's funny to hear both the positive and negative comments on the 696, as they are about identical the shit storm that was flying around during the release of the 999.  Some people don't want to let go of the past, and others embrace change and what it inevitably brings.  It's the same story now.  

Having just seen the 696 in person last weekend, I think it's a pretty remarkable looking bike and has performance numbers to match.  The only things I didn't 100% like were the overall largeness of the tank and the headlight positon along with the way too small bikini fairing. If it was out sooner, or better yet a larger displacement version, I would have probably bought one instead of my Triumph.  I've been around the current monsters and just wanted something different.

As I see it, the bikes that truely become classics are those that evoke an emotional response and ruffle some feathers stylistically.  The 999 did it in a big way and it's already being regarded as a modern classic and possibly even a better bike than its replacement.  I think the 696 will easily do the same and cosidering the efforts to broaden their consumer appeal, I think Ducati has done a pretty darn good job with the update.  

Ron knows....It's not easy being cheesy.

just about everyone hates the 999, except for the people who bought them. my point is this. the 696 is more about fashion than riding. its uncomfortable, and it has taken a step back in the way of improvements that matter. like wind protection and rear view mirrors, just to name a few things. its all about looks. and i am tired of hearing about all of the race derived parts, such as the brakes and swing arm and stuff. if you want a race bike their are plenty out there to choose from. but there is no longer a bike like the first generation monster. thats my point. its all about fashion. not riding. its super cheeeeeeezzzzzie. :-*

I personally am not a huge fan of the 696's looks...not all of them, basically the frame and swingarm, the rest i could grow to love...but then again i what do i know?...i dig the classics, but i'd definately be down for riding a 696 around and checkin it out. its supposed to be awesome, has got some great reviews and if you like the looks, then it's your bike. I'm a huge fan of the single sided swingarm and the full trellis frame, but the 695 was DSS, so it makes sense the 696 doesn't have one.. i really want to know what ducati's gonna do with the bigger bikes.

p.s. Ron - nothing personal, but can you please start talking about things in your post other than 14t sprockets, "your" 2006 s2r 800, how much you hate the 696?...come on...contribute something new. [thumbsup]

You have no idea what you're talking about.

ALL Monsters are as much about fashion as riding.  It may be uncomfortable to YOU, but not everyone.  It actually felt fine to me.  If you want a comfortable Ducati, but a Multistrada.  WAAAAY more comfy than any Monster.  

Wind protection?  Monsters don't have any.  That little fairing, new or old, is a joke.  Want wind protection?  Buy a Multi...or better yet a Goldwing.  

It supposedly has more power than the 695, which is an improvement "that matters".  It also supposedly is smoother and runs better due to the Siemens injection, which also is an improvement "that matters".  It has better brakes which is an imprevement "that matters".  The frame/swingarm are also stiffer which helps handling...another improvement "that matters".

So what if the rear view mirrors suck...they suck on most bikes, including the original Monster (shook like crazy).  That's what CRGs are for.

What else you have?

hey ron, maybe you should sent a letter to Ducati urging them to continue to build the old monster forever, and then see if they will include these items since you obviously aren't concerned with style and funcion comes first.

Style is what ultimately sells bikes.  I'll bring up the 999 again.  Its styling was too much for most people and it didn't sell well.  That doesn't mean it wasn't a great performer though.  Why do you think the 1098 and 848 look so much more mainstream?  I'm guess Ducati wanted to get out of their sales slump and stay in business.  They are pulling styling cues from around the industry as well as their past models and finding a combination that alot of people like.  If the 696 accomplishes this for the monster then I am all for anything that keeps a marque around that we are all obviuosly very passionate about.   And why wouldn't you want race derived parts trickling down into production bikes.  I see, they are just too stylish for you maybe?  Drum brakes for your then...

did you get that windscreen on ebay? did you see one in tangerine with the black stripe? can someone photo shop that onto my s2r with the 14tooth front sprocket so i can see what it looks like before i give this guy an offer

Well, you boys are making me blush.  I have always gotten a lot of attention since I am 5'11" and 380 lbs.  These curves just love a great rider.  The rash is almost healed and according to the commercials, the PROACTIV should have the acne cleared up in less then 30 days.

Since you have ridden your 696 for 70 miles, how is it for comfort? When I sat on it I felt pushed up against the tank. It was uncomfortable. I thought that in a riding position it might be fine. They didn't allow a test ride so all I could do was sit. I really like the bike, but worry about the comfort.

When I first saw a picture of one, I hated it.  They are growing on me though...  The only thing I can't seem to get past is the Exhaust pipes, they are shaped so strange.  :-\

I think Ducati did what they had to though, the old school purists are the minority.  They have modernized the Monster and I think they pulled it off pretty well.  I think they will sell a ton of them.

I didn't like at first, still don't when looking at the pictures.  I decided to keep an open mind until I saw one.  Last saturday I went to the dealership to check it out and I actually like it alot, even the headlight, which I think looks goofy in the pics.  The only two things that I don't care for, are about the first two things you change anyway The exhaust & The rearsets.  That also happens to be what I don't like about current monsters.  I think this will be a huge seller for them.  When they come out with a larger displacement 2v motor I think I'll be all over it.

Maybe that is what it needs...  I couldn't figure out why it keeps bottoming out on speed bumps.  Thanks!

  Yes when just cruzing long distances, I start to slide toward the tank and mash my nads, no problem, just re-adjust. What I like is the bar reach. I have long arms so I get a good mostly uprite position.

I'm a 5' 6" guy, and I've got 500 miles on my 696 (anticipating first service next Friday!).

Comfort hasn't been an issue at all, it's been perfectly comfy for me, including a day I did a little over 200 miles on it.

I love the bike (ready for that extra rev range though ;) ).

I think that people shouldn't just look at the bike and make an expression about the looks...because this board proves that the monster is one of the most heavily modified bikes out there.

So I waited, on the fence, and then downloaded the accessories catalog...now tell me there aren't going to be some great bikes out there!....darks with carbon...guys will get one tank panel white, the other red and paint the centre plastic part green for the 696 tricolore, it is going to be brilliant seeing what ducati riders do with this machine to individualize it.

I like to think of Monsters as a good base to be given touches of the rider's personality. The 696 is a great base!

The 696 looks like a pretty cool bike up close and in person. One of the local dealers has a white one in stock outfitted with Termi slip ons. The thing sounds pretty good, too. The sales manager is a friend of mine and usually brings out a 1098 or a GT1000 to our local bike nights (on another forum). He's probably gonna bring out the 696 this week and let me take it for a ride.
The bike probably puts out similar power to my 800.
If I needed a third bike I might buy one.

This weekend I was able to log about 80 miles on a 696 demo and all I can say is "What a fun bike!"  Truly the lightest, tightest turning, most nimble monster I have ridden. The Siemens fuel injection is SWEET!  Smooth, yet responsive.  The brakes...well, they are radial mounted calipers so that pretty much speaks for itself.  They more than stop the bike adequately and they work really nice with the Showa front forks. 

In the local 25-30mph curves I simply rode around in second gear and never really thought about shifting.  Getting on the freeway, the bike gets up to speed very quickly and then some!  Probably due to a combination of the 696 power and the light weight of the bike.  It is really smooth cruising down the freeway.

I found the ergonomics to be very user friendly - the pegs are in a cozy spot yet you can still put the balls of your feet on them for more spirited riding; the seat puts you forward and holds you there; the tank feels narrow like the 1098; the reach to the bars was nice and neutral - easy to get your elbows down for cornering but not committed like clip ons.  Unlike my 2000 M900S, I didn't ever feel like I really needed to change positions approaching a corner.  Although the seat height is a tad lower than the M620/M695/M750D it seems even lower because the bike doesn't have the pegs and peg brackets poking on your leg forcing you to bend your knee.

I am sure that I am forgetting something...but basically, it was easy and fun to ride - a great all around package.  For the record - I am 5'1" and have ridden a wide range of Monsters.

I have about 170 miles on my new white 696 and every mile has been a blast (even during break-in).  I have found that I need to "re-adjust" where I place my butt, but it's not very often.  The reach is perfect, and pegs are in the perfect spot for not taking one in the leg when walking the bike.  I have ridden my friends S2R800 and the 696 seems much more nimble.  I'm 5'10 and about 135lbs.  This bike feels like I was born with it attached.  Stock exhaust sounds okay, but looks a little funny.  Headlight has really grown on me.  Overall, I couldn't have asked for a better bike.  [moto]

Did any of you folks who put mileage on the 696 notice oil temperature?

Ya - The weather here has been from the low 70's to mid 80's.  Forgive me, but I cannot remember the specific ranges that the oil temp reads; but I see usually 3 bars in usual riding, and 4 bars through the twisties.  I have about 210mi on it so far...

I was talking to msincredible ( [beer] ) about how her 695 is so much fun because the whole powerband can be used on the street + in the twistys, whereas the S4 is such that you can't open it up to its fullest potential most of the time....

-This is the main reason I would love to test a 696....It just seems like so much more of its power can be utilized in everyday riding, thereby "making more sense" for a wider range of riding applications... :)

I only looked down at it a couple of times...since my bike doesn't have an oil guage I didn't really pay attention.  Sorry!

Compared to the other small displacement Monsters - there was less shifting.  I would be more inclined to hop on the 696 and ride to the store and back then the other Monsters.

The bar gauge sits at 3 bars - the manual would convert that to a temp range. I haven't played much with the modes to see the actual temp reading. I used to get stressed doing that when running in my 620, until I learnt not to worry about it so much.

Same here.  I was a little worried when it got up to four bars but that was after about 40mins of back road twisties.  Seems to be running nicely.  Not much heat on my legs either.

Oh, well. Part of the reason I asked was that I was hoping I could find a downloadable accessories catalog for my 620.

I finally got to see a 696 in a dealership the other day.  Although the salesman was a complete POS the bike really surprised me. 

It still looks a little Japanese to me and I'm not about to abandon the "classic" Monster style but the new Monster is still very much a Monster.  I suppose this is 2008 and I can't expect the old design to last forever.  It will do Ducati well.

I wanted to sit on it and try it for feel but I guess I didn't look like a potential sale to the salesguy.   [roll]  He would do fine in Hardley Ableson dealership.  Oh well.  His loss.   ;D

I tried the 696 finally... Handles better than My S4R.. Looks really nice. Not as fun as my S4R though... but that's because I am comparing it with a 4v 996cc that is a blast to ride! I will wait for the 4v engine on the 696 chassis... that will be a great bike! you know it's coming!!

 Just the other day, someone told me that Ducati was planning a 1000cc motored 696 framed model, or was it 1098 motor? Oh, I don't remember, it sounded like a good plan though.


 I like a bunch of things that 696 has to offer, but $10,000 for a 700cc bike? I don't think so.

unfortunatley i know that a 4v 996 motor is coming in the new monster layout, so is the end of the world. I hope the latter comes first :o

for some reason, i don't understand the "handling" argument when i rag on the new hideous monster. i mean how far would you push the first generation monster that you would actually want better handling out of it? i mean if i want superhandling, i would buy a dedicated sport bike. i mean you can get a zx-6 and i would guarantee that i would out handle even the newest monster. if you want a pure sport bike, there are so many choices out there. they could be from ducati or anyother manufacturer.
my s2r eighthundred handles just fine for me. but if i want a replacement or just want to upgrade within that platform, i am out of luck.  :'(

Went to the dealer today and they actually had three 696 in stock that are not spoken for.  Tried to deal on one and just couldn't line up the numbers.  The big boss was gone and he assured me over the phone all would be well.  The shop now has a guy that had to have come from some gigantic car dealer like suzuki shop.  High pressure, not making sense on financing a bike when I have the cash to buy it outright, etc.

The Dealer near me is selling them like Hot Cakes.

I wonder if anyone is having any issues with them yet.

I had mine given it's first service on Friday, at 600 miles, and I now have ~750 miles on it. No problems whatsoever :thumbsup:

I'm still taking it easy with the rpm, adding 1K per 100 miles, per the dealers advice, so my current limit is 8K.

I opened it up sharply to around 7.5K yesterday and I think I dislodged a retina, and very quickly into license losing territory.

Isn't this meant to be the small Monster? Goodness knows what the bigger bikes are like.

Scary Fast. My Next Monster will prob be a smaller one... Maybe even a 696

god forbid if you ever throw your leg over a gsxr 1000 or a 1098 or something like that. its funny when you are on a small bike like yours or mine for that matter they feel really fast.  but some guys buy the big bikes and it sickens me how fast those big machines really are. I was once told that a r-1 has a higher thrust to weight ratio than a F-16. i would have to crunch the numbers but its pretty close.
i used to think that my superhawk was fast. you know,996cc's. one would think that it could haul ass. and it did. but i was next to my buddy one day on the highway. he was on a brand new gsxr 1000 and he left me like i was in REVERSE gear. i don't ride the big bikes anymore. just to fast for me. but you should ride one. just to get an idea of how powerful they are. it is quite an experience. and it goes to show why so many of the big bore bikes are behind my local dealer, rolled up in a ball of plastic and aluminum with an average of 300 or so miles on them.

its nice to see that manufacturers do make exciting small machines for people like us to enjoy. i have been thinking about buying an s4rs latley. but that is more driven by the fact that i have a limited time to purchase a new one, you know with the current style change but for now my eighthundred is still my favorite of all the bikes that i have owned, even my beloved 250R [thumbsup]

Although riding an R-1 would be incredibly exhilarating, I don't think I could take it.  I used to be a serious hellion in my cars growing up, (145mph on 2-lane back roads......stupid!  [bang]) but since then I have started to really love my life and the ones around me.  It's this love for life that makes me keep my cool.  I cant do it anymore.  Heart goes faint, head gets light, no good for me.  So, riding yesterday keeping my rps under 6k, was still a blast for me.  I just like to be out there riding.  I don't need the heart attack!  [thumbsup]

Ohh, 228 miles on my 696 and no problems. Thighs get a little warm though. No biggie.

i only worry that as i get older i will look at riding in general that way. 10 years ago, i never thought i would ride an eighthundred. i only hope that i continue to love riding as much as i do now. you never know though :-\my greatest fear in riding is hanging on to tight. the ron [evil]

I've never ridden a superbike, and I would love too. I might try a racing school 'taster' type-deal over here in the UK, just to get that experience.

On the real road though? My 696 struggles to burble along under the limit in 30 mph zones (the urban limit here in the UK), I imagine riding a 1098 at 70 mph would be similar.

At least I'll get to hear my 696 at full throttle occasionally, I would imagine that would be suicide. and most certainly liberty-threatening, to try that on a 1098.

All said, they are gorgeous bikes, and the world is a better place for them.

But back to what this thread is supposed to be about... I've always liked the idea of Ducati. It had an air about it that i thought was what biking for me should be about... but i never really dug the looks.  It was like looking at the librarian everyone says is good in bed and thinking "yeah, but she's so mousy"... then i saw the 696, and damn if she didn't let her hair down and slip into a pair of skinny jeans.  It's a beautiful bike.  And it's going to be my first, if i can just get the deal i want on her.

I agree with zedsaid that the ron has been caught making civil posts that were enjoyable to read. I also agree with the growing consensus that the reflexive negativity has become incredibly tiresome.

My wife loves eggplant. I hate it. Neither one of us is ever going to convince the other to change our opinions. Since I'm a grown-up I can understand that she likes something I don't and accept that as right and good. I can also watch her enjoy her eggplant or listen to her describe her enjoyment of it without feeling the need to remind her of my loathing for it - she already knows, just as we know how the ron feels about the 696.

696, I love it, 900 miles, engine freeing up.

I had my first nightime 'freeway' blast the other night.

That headlight may be controversial in the styling dept, but it sure lights up the way  [thumbsup]

The owner's manual is now up on ducati.com.  Like the new dash or not, it gives you gobs of info, incuding a bit of erngine diagnostics.  Me, I'm a big round analogue guy, but there is a worthwhile trade off, tons of info in a small space.

I appreciate that Ducati is making a new Monster. Some parts of it is better than on the current ones (brakes, output/weight, lower half of the ergonomics, color swap option, attaching rear luggage, way cooler stock mirrors + + +) What I don't like is the shorter distance to the bars and what I see in front of me - looks like a much smaller bike from the riders view. There are other styling parts that I'm on the fence about, but I don't plan on getting one - so I won't get too much into those.

I have defended Ron before, and will again if necessary - although I agree that he shouldn't post like he did in this thread. What I can imagine worries him is the same thing that worries me...... if this design is going to be the only alternative in the near future. My dealer thinks so, even as early as next year. I'm just in the early stages of my love affair with my Monster and would hate to be forced to end it so soon.

The 696 owners will probably have a better bike (if it fits them) than I do. I appreciate that Ducati pleases a wider customer base. My love for my bike is based largely upon the "fact" that the current Monsters are/look more unique than the majority of other bikes, including the 696. Ducati has made their place in the market by talking directly to people's hearts - now they are being more sensible and that doesn't suit Ducati, IMO.

I look forward to reading about mods and new models coming up - maybe there should be 696 specific boards, accessories & mods + tech at least?

It's kinda growing on me, 'specially after seeing one with the CF termis on it, looks a lot less bulky around the rear. Bar end mirrors seem to help the look of the profile too.

I bet the digital dash is going to be on all the future monsters. its good in a way but bad in a way too... overall it has really grown on me. Originally i saw it without an open mind. Its very angular but overall the look isn't bad. If they change the exhaust for the bigger bikes (695 and bigger monsters have different exhausts) and do a sss it would add to it.

I have to admit, I share more than one of Ron's opinions of the bike, but I promise I won't stink up the thread with them.  But I also have to admit I saw the bike, live, for the first time last week in SLC and it looks great in person.  I think it's going to make a lot of people very happy, and I like that.  (As long as their not IN FRONT of me in the expresso line at the next DOC hospitality tent.)

I always wanted a Red/White S2r.  Then a M900 kind of dropped in my lap.  As I've spent a bunch of time (and money) modding it, I've really grown to love the "Ducs that suck"* and really can't see ever owning a F.I. one.  I know the S*R line is more sophisticated (well, they are before $4k of mods, anyway :o) but IMO that very fact lends to the "Monster" mystique.



*"Ducs that suck" ie. carbs suck, fuel injection  blows, literally.

This is the "Official 696 APPRECIATION Thread!!!". As a result most DMF'ers respects this. We should stick to the topic and and let other DMF'ers enjoy the new 696 for what it is.

Perhaps we(The DMF) needs an ""Official 696 UN-APPRECIATION Thread!!!""  [evil] where both sides of the equation can posts about the 969 without being persecuted.

You mean a "Bashing" thread.. well.. it sucks that some people are just SOOOOO stuck in their old ways/views.. reluctant to change and unappreciative of what "the company who made the ride you love" is doing with a new product. Maybe we should start a thread that reads "Ducati back stabbers unite here" and there you can post how much you hate the new 696. how about that! or better yet.. you may start a new forum with your new found friends who like to bash other people's ride.. because the last time I checked.. NO ONE LIKES pricks who look down on other people's ride. If you MUST bash a particular ride.. then do it on another brand at least.. gosh.. these kids are just a pain!!!

I just put a down payment on a 696 Monster Dark, can't wait for it. I'm a new biker. I've taken the safety classes and have only ridden cruisers but I've loved the Monsters since I first saw them when I was a little kid. The test drive of the 696 is what sold me completely. I don't have any plans for mods, not really sure what I'd do. I'm a car guy this is my first venture into the motorcycle world.

Anyone else in here scared of fueling issues?  I hope they fix the problem soon.

No problem - we have infected your computer with the Mod Virus, it will then infect you through the magnetic field around cables - soon you'll feel the urge and then you'll be all over this place - credit card easily available! [thumbsup] ;)

IMO the 900 (FI or carb) is a better engine than the 1000DS anyway.  I'm sure plenty will disagree with me, but I used to have an '01 M900 and now have an '04 MTS1000.  While I like the MTS better overall (less sexy, but more useful/comfortable)...I definitely liked the 900 engine better.  I can't really pinpoint why, I just do.  [coffee]

I'm still waiting to test ride a 696.  I'm not buying one, but I really want to see what the riding differences are compared to the Monsters I'm used to.  Damn rain won't go away though!  >:(

some owners are expierencing the same symptoms as the S2R 1000, however, this is with 696's with DP kits.  The bikes would run too lean and will lead to sputtering, stalling, and over heating. 

I was all for the 696, but now I'll wait for the problem to be fixed (if they do fix it) or buy a s2r 800. 

mmm... I am sorry to hear that. I'm sure it can be addressed ... but it sucks that such a great concept has old problems like this.

I test rode a 696 today, 30+ miles.  Gotta say I am impressed [thumbsup]  The suspension actually works out of the box (for me anyway).  Fantastic handling, good high speed stability, nice acceleration, smooth engine.  There was a little throttle snatch at low speed, possibly due to a little to much play in the throttle cable, but more likely a combination of me getting used to the riding position and the feel of APC clutch.  Otherwise the engine was surge free and very responsive.  The riding position does take some getting used to, but it is comfy.

How are the ergonomics on the 696? I haven't had the chance to see one in the flesh. The reach looks a bit more aggressive than on the '99 Monster 750 I used to own. Comfort is the biggest issue in my old age.  ;D

I only sat on it for a minute, but at 47 and 6'4", I found it more comfortable due to the footpegs being a little forward and/or down plus the handle bars closer. My impression then and there.

I think it looks amazing, and I was gutted when my husby decided against getting one. :( I tried really hard to influence him, I really did. Alas, it wasn't enough.  :'(

Nah, I'm just going to get my tank painted soon, and fix up all the dings and broken lights to make it look presentable again. (ductape is holding all the turn signals together  [roll]) Hey, it's got 61K on it, it's not exactly a showroom bike anymore. ;) Someday though...I just might upgrade. You never know!

I did a 30 mile test ride.  You are sitting closer to the bars, so you are less leaned over.  The peg position is also more relaxed, though somehow it seems like there is more available lean angle.  The itty bitty windscreen does have some effect at speed.  The seating position is a little strange and would take me a while to get used to.  The suspension, at least for me, works quite well out of the box and is quite comfy.  Overall, I was quite impressed.

The new instrument cluster looks great - with the carbon cover.

and the guys who buy the dark or black models should seriously think about ceramic coating that header...that would look cool (literally!)

Just sat on one last saturday and it fit me like a glove.  I'm short, so the bike did not feel big, and it was light to boot!  I thought it was a toy compared to my 82 yamaha seca 650.  It felt as light as my CRF230 dual sport and looked just as flickable too!  I'll take mine in dark with cf termi's and front fender please!  :)

I've have 500 miles on my 696 now, and i'm really loving it (First Bike). I check the oil, tire pressure, and lube the chain, but I was wondering if there are any other checks I should be making. I booked the 600 mile check up when i picked up the bike but the earliest I could get was July 17th. I just wanted to make sure i'm not forgetting something. I know alot about cars but very little about bikes.

Check or adjust the chain to its 'freeplay.'  Should be a easy job if you have a center stand.

Well, I comfirmed it with some friends of mine.  I had them pic between the new BMW GS 800 and the Monster 696 and all 4 liked the Ducati much better.  Looks like my Alaska trip will have to wait a bit longer.  There has to b a way to get both bikes though.....  [moto]

I just picked up my pearl white 696 today and I love it!  I will post pics as soon as I get a chance.  I do have a quick question:  When the bike is turned off there are red blinking lights at the top of the digital instrument panel...is that normal?

Hello all,
I'm suppose to be getting my monster 696 sometime next week, but I'm reluctant to pull the trigger because i'm scared of the cost of maintenance.  I plan to use it for commuting 3 to 4 days a week and I'm just concerned about some of the problems I've read about the 696.  I love the new monster and would love to own one; but I'm seriously considering a Japanese bike just for the reliability and the cost of maintenance.

So my question is do any of you use your 696 for commuting?  Any problems?  And what's the cost for maintenance?

i commute.  no problems other than detroit traffic.  the bike is great in traffic--quick and nimble...awesome brakes when you need them--but the people here are nuts.

I'm down with my 696.  About 350 miles and having fun  [drink]  Last night put on some Speedymoto frame sliders and took off the reflectors on the fork.  Used dental floss to shave them off, and then WD40 to remove the goo.

The trip is going to happen!  Not with a monster but with my crf230L  [moto].  I feel like it is my duty to do this cross country trek on my little bike just to shut up all those big bike whores!  Specialy in the ADV rider world.  BTW I'll be starting my trip from VA!  Woot Woot!  and it won't matter if gas is $10 bucks a gal. because my wee lil bike loves to sip on the stuff.  I'll be doing the Trans American Trail before my Alaska trip so I can figure out how to pack the bike without straining her. 


To keep this on subject, I should be getting a 696 dark for christmas!  Can't wait!  I'll wrap her in a bow and act surprised!   [thumbsup]

Just got my red Monster last week and my husband recently asked the dealership if they sell a "Ducati scraper" to get my ass off the seat.  [laugh]  I LOVE LOVE LOVE my new bike!!  Since I am short, we shaved the seat a bit, but it is still very comfortable (plus, I am a lifelong equestrian and judge seat comfort along the lines of "hmmm, unless I feel like my seat bones are cutting their way through flesh and possibly staining the saddle with blood, it's good enough for the ride," which might explain why I generally ride in a bareback pad!).

I really don't think I could have made a better choice as this bike feels like "my bike," not just a bike I bought for myself.  I started riding this spring, did the GZ 250 and MSF and still can't believe how nice it is to ride something that doesn't panic and try to bolt into oncoming traffic when the neighbor leaves his trash cans out.

If this level of fun is characteristic of Ducatis in general, I can see why people are so brand loyal.  I am really impressed and don't care if anyone else likes the bike or not--I have enough love for it to make up the difference!   [thumbsup]

Probably should have introduced myself in the Intro section - but I figured this would be intro enough.  Just got my red 696 on Friday - put 350+ miles on it this weekend.  I love this bike!  This is my fourth bike (and by far the best!) and fits me and my riding style.  Hubby and I are going to the Black Hills on vacation this September and I can't wait to ride with the Monster.  I had a custom gel seat made (SHOCKtec gel - GREAT stuff), dropped the forks about an inch and set the preload to soft.  I also had the dealership put on a different set of bars - more swept back and they used spacers to get the bars to clear the tank.  I am having Pazzo levers added this week.  I have short arms, short legs and short fingers  :P.  The Termis complete the bike  [thumbsup].

Did you drop the forks (room for that?)(= "higher" front) or did you drop the bike to sit lower on the forks? Did you ride it before and after, if so, can you describe the difference in handling?

Which bars (Rizoma?) for the sweep? "Spacers" - do you mean risers, if so, which and how much higher?

The bar is one that my dealer orders from Japan - it called the "Coerce - Naked Bar - Monster Machine Control ".  They said you won't find it on the internet - if you are interested in one you can contact Ducati Omaha.  The dealer put a spacer (not a riser) under the handlebar clamp - that effectively raised the handlebar clamp which raised the bars somewhat.  They very slightly reduced the lock so the bars won't hit on either side.  There are no risers available for the 696 as far as I know.  I didn't measure the before and after but there was a significant difference between the stock handlebar and the Coerce - before, my short arms were at full lock just trying to reach the bars and that was with me fully leaning on the tank - I would have really had to stretch to actually turn the bars from that position - as you can see in the photo I don't have any problems reaching the bars now.  I presented Ducati Omaha with a problem and they started thinking of ways to fix it - they are really great to deal with.

I didn't ride the bike before they dropped the triple clamp however, hubby did ride one that had not been dropped and he didn't notice a difference in handling between that one and my bike.  The bike was dropped to sit lower on the forks - triple clamp dropped (not forks - sorry  [cheeky]).

I am looking at used 696's lately and have found a couple in balck, but I want white.  I know the colored body pieces swap out, but can't seem to find prices.  Has anybody swapped out their body work yet?  What did it set you back?

Bad Kitty... you can have those few parts either powder coated or painted at an autobody for cheap.  I don't know prices of autobody, but powder coating would probably run you around $150 - $200 which would include all prep work of removing old paint, etc.  On the 696, body panel color is super easy to change... frame color would require a major disassembly. 

I'm chiming in, I've been riding on the back of my husbands Harley for a couple of months now, and decided I wanted my own bike. Went into the Ducati dealership, sat on the 696M and fell in love, right in the showroom. They had black and red, but I too wanted white... So here I am waiting until next Tuesday for her to arrive from the warehouse  :)

Depending on how much your used 696 costs, if you had to order new body pieces, that would cost you between $800-1000, which might bring you to "new" bike cost anyway. I'd just powder coat/paint it I think!

I just got mine last week.  I bought a very pre-owned 2009 696 dark with just 500miles.  I think I got a great deal for 7k. Private sale.
Just put about 75 miles on her and i'm still grinning & smiling. I absolutely love this duck. I use to have a 1999 750 Monster.
The main reason I bought this bike is I am vertically challenged & the low seat height suits me + I just ordered the low seat height which will make it even more at home...everywhere I go people just can't take there eyes off her.
I really like the new styling & it feels as fast as my old 750 monster.

I just stop at my Dealer today and ask them about 696 Colour kits. They quote me $1400, and there are 10 different colors you can choose.

From what i understand MSRP on those kits are $800, so your dealer is padding himself pretty good there.

That would be great, but I'm not sure I believe that MSRP. I've heard prices in the several hundreds of dollars per side for the "tank" panels. Add in a new fender and seat cowl, and $800 seems like a relative bargain. I certainly can't get my 620's tank painted for less than $800, and that's using existing parts.

If they really are at that price point, I predict they'll sell a zillion. For one thing, that would mean it hardly matters what color a used bike is, or whether the fender is chipped - just buy a color kit and almost all the painted bits are new!

Well the clues in the title really - can you spot the difference? No prizes on this one.

Never really been a big fan of black wheels, which is a shame as 90% of new bikes come with them. So I thought I'd something about it and I'm realy glad I did. With the black swingarm / seat and frame I felt the black wheels made the bike look a bit dark and dull and the colour scheme needed 'lifting'. Having always liked the silver wheels on the M1100 I thought I'd give it a go. As ever the pics don't really do the wheels justice they've been finished with a really nice high gloss laquer that looks like glass. What do you think? Be honest now..........
