do you use water- or petroleum-based cleaner?  If water-based, which one?

Thanks!

I'm partial to Stoddard Solvent myself..
Generally safe, and smells good too ;D

Gunk and Diesel mixed.

It really all depends on what you are cleaning. If your water based cleaner has a heater, it can be somewhat successful  on not-so dirty pieces. However, I prefer good old high VOC cleaners. Most solvent based use mineral spirits which given time can clean just about anything. Just try to stay away from acetone.
