Title: aftermarket exhaust for 2012 M796 ABS
Post by: subin on October 17, 2012, 03:09:06 PM
I know, I know, another exhaust post..., but I am in California, so pardon my post.

Just got a 2012 M796 and the place I bought it from would not sell the Termi kit to me due to CARB state regulation, as it is a race only kit.
Called another shop at Glendale, the lady at the parts dept was very nice and told me they have the kit in stock. I asked if they could install it and she told me they could, but I cannot ride it out of their shop as it is a race only kit.

Fine, I'd just buy the kit from Motovationusa as they offer free shipping and install it myself.
The bike did not come with battery tender connector installed. I asked the dealer why not and they just did not seem that it is necessary. Fine, I'd just do this while I put the new "race only" ECU on. They were nice enough to offer me the connector for free, though.

I am sure that I am not the only one here who would prefer other brand exhaust, but for the sake of warranty, if I cannot wait, I'd do this with the Termi kit.
Please understand that I have went through the warranty threads also and I do understand what the members are saying, but just to avoid any hassle.

:)

Sorry, I kind of talked myself into to go with the Termi kit when I was writing that post...

Originally, I was going to ask the board members about other plug-and-play exhaust+ECU options.
My research found that I could get the exhaust from motowheels and ask them to program the ECU, which is probably the least expensive way to do this.
I could also go with 3rd party tunable ECU, but I don't want to create warranty issue.

In California, starting Jan 1, 2013, the SB435 bill makes it a crime to install aftermarket exhaust made after Jan 1, 2013 without a label showing that it meets the state's noise and emission level. This is why I need to make the decision before the end of the year. I guess, I still have a couple of months to decide.

The titanium Termi kit is homologated, so its not stamped with those nasty "race use only" words.

Pricey though  >>   http://store.commoto.com/ducati-monster-termignoni-titanium-slip-exhaust-p-99926.html (http://store.commoto.com/ducati-monster-termignoni-titanium-slip-exhaust-p-99926.html)

Alternatives?

Your other options are many and varied and have been previously discussed at great length  >>  http://www.ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=12166.0 (http://www.ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=12166.0)

IMO if you're just fitting slip-on exhaust cans you dont need to do anything to/with your ECU.

This is the label subin is referring to:

I have yet to see an aftermarket Ducati exhaust with this label.

Don't know how the new bill is going to be played at this time, but it would not hurt for me to get the aftermarket slip-on before the end of the year.

Thanks for the information from members over this and other forums. I have finished the first stage of the mods on the 2012 M796.
Vendors I used including Proitalia, motowheels, monster parts, motovationusa and  Chris from Cincy Desmo Service.

Pantah body kit (Proitalia has the best price)
CRG shorty levers
Oberon bar end mirrors
Rizoma turn zero signals
T Rex axles and frame sliders
Evotech fender eliminator
ECU reflash by Cincy Desmo Service
K&N
Akrapovic carbon slip-on

All the vendors above are top notch! I was going to install the Termi kit, but would prefer a different slip-on. Initially, I contacted Matt at Motowheels, but he could not sell me the kit, because I live in CA. Then I've found Chris from Cincy Desmo Service. A quick research showed that he is reputable and he told me he has the equipment and maps to do the reflash. Shortly after, I got a stock ECU from eBay from a local rider in Pasadena. Chris then quoted me a good price for the ECU upgrade, K&N and Akrapovic carbon slip-on.  Everything showed up as expected and all work well. Chris told me he disabled the O2 sensor and exhaust valve.  I then found the bike's start up display does not show “796 Race” (I do have the ambient temperature, though). A phone call to Chris and he told me the map from Redline is not the DP map, so that cleared that up.
Just rode 70 miles today and I honestly could not tell a huge HP gain, but it is smoother from 3k rpm and up. I left the baffles in the slip-on  and it is not too loud, which I like.
When working on these mods, the most time I spent was with the Evotech fender eliminator. Thanks to the member who posted the video with his 696 on you tube and also Atomic fender eliminator's video. Since I am going to slip-on, I did the tail tidy job from the bottom with the stock exhaust removed, it is indeed a lot easier. However, since I have to put the resistors for Rizoma turn signals inside the tail tidy,  it took me five tries to find a good route for the seat lock cable, so it won't bind/interfere with all the wiring.

There you have it and here is the final result.
