Title: paint scheme .... decisions, decisions .....
Post by: carbmon on October 19, 2012, 08:49:01 AM
Finally at the point where I've got to make a final decision on the frame/wheels paint scheme for my project ('01 M750).  This'll be an ultra-naked, open frame with no bodywork other than buttstop and front fender/full OEM style hugger.  Using pods on the FCRs to open the airbox area and moving all the electrics, regulator, pump, wiring etc out of sight as much as possible.  OEM instrument pod replaced by a single instrument can, clip-ons, monoposto.  Mufflers are low Staintunes (polished SS).  Swingarm is aluminum.  Fork is Ohlins RT which has gold upper tubes I'm not inclined to try to change.  All the billet bits are silver aluminum.

Here's the pic I've long had pinned on the shop wall as my 'style model'

I'm 'fixed' on the basic silver/red scheme.  Have the classic Moto Ducati tank logo and the red 'swoosh' line will follow the '01 tank profile.  With much effort I now have a hoop rear frame instead of the standard monster chop and am in the process of fabbing a custom seat/buttstop to 'float' over the frame as in the style model pic.

Here's my point of hesitation (and open to y'all's thoughts) .... I'm running '01 vintage 5-spoke Marchesini mags and will not change that.  I'd long figured they should be red to match the frame with the aluminum swingarm silver to carry the line of the engine back.  But now I wonder if that'll be too much red and they (wheels) should be black to get lost with the tires?

yeah, I've played with the nifty DSS configurator tool, wish I were a photoshop wizard but I'm not.  FYI I can't/won't PC the mag wheels so all this will be wetpaint, the red will then be a perfect match throughout.  Need to get the wheels/frame painted now so they can enjoy a long cure while I work on other bits.

Thoughts?  Got pics of DSS models with red frame/wheels and contrasting other bits?

Not quite what you're looking for, but here's a red wheel/silver/grey/grey scheme.  You can find a coupla more pics here:  http://www.ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=205.msg1463#msg1463 (http://www.ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=205.msg1463#msg1463)

There are a lot of great wheel paint schemes between all red and all black - both of which, IMO, will ruin the subtle elegance of your basic design. Silver rim and partial silver/red spokes maybe?

The Öhlin gold fork tubes - hmm.. no!  Black, grey, silver, red or again a combo. If you're not happy about having to anodize - try a silver or grey vinyl first and anodize at the next fork service.

are the 5 spokers magnesium?
if so, go with the magnesium goldish/green

plus it's very raw in style.

the Ohlins gold forks  [thumbsdown]  try a vinyl wrap in red to see if you like it.

Yes, wheels are magnesium, no thanks to mag green/gold. [thumbsdown]

Wrap for trying out fork colors is a good idea, thanks. [thumbsup]

I do like the 'flow' of the bodywork on #92 ... how the seat piece ties to the tank rather than the usual upholstery wrap into the tank (but gee those sure are some trick re-shaped tanks on both bikes!). Some good inspiration / ideas there.

These pics also show that silver wheels are not for me (though spokies are neat for some projects no doubt).

Thanks for posting those!
